Tyson built his reputation fighting old Holmes, old Spinks, Bruno, and a host of other overrated 80's heavyweights. That was probably the worst recent era of boxing competition in the HW's since Larry Holmes' reign...............:rofl

Sanders, Purrity & Brewster all hit harder than Douglas. Who else did Buster KO? Exactly, no one.

Most people feel now is one the weakest Heavyweight era's of all time, and I could certainly see why. I will agree that the 80's were no better, but at least Tyson fought ATG's, you cant say the same for Wlad.

He beat Mccall to get the chance to fight Tyson, the same guy that laid out Lewis with one punch. Purrity is easily less powerful and a worse boxer than Buster, the guy has over 15 losses.

C'mon 33 what version of McCall did he beat - the drugged :tired one or the crazy :nut one? The limited Douglas fought his best fight, hanged around until the later rounds and stopped a prime MT. Tyson is what now, just 40. In the past 5 years, a mid 30s+ Tyson (not old at all by HW standards) would have been beat by dozens of HWs - many form the former Eastern block. McBride did - and he's nothing but a journeyman. The slightly older LL beat Mike like an old rented mule :yep

It's cool but I disagree. I'd take Douglas over Ibrag (at least on Douglas's good nights when he was in shape and detemined). Don't know how one could watch douglas via tyson and not think that guy (obviously douglas had character issues and wasn't allways even near his best) was a top hw who could give a lot of atg's problems -- 6'4 athletic, strong, great jab, great chin, very good power, tons of heart that night.

I'm probably a little biased to the late 80s and 90s given that I was growing up then (although i wasn't as big a boxing fan as now). I think there have been some very good late 90's/2000's hws such as vitaly, wlad, lewis (although he's a carry over), tua when in shape, ike briefly, and others. these guys could certainly hang and most win titles in earlier eras.

from what i've seen of ibrag especially is that the guy is solid, with good speed, but wouldn't be anything but a fringe contender in many eras. i also think it's been a pretty weak division very recently and ibrag had a relatively easy route to being a title holder (briggs cashes his lottery ticket vs sergei -whom i think was one of the better fighters of this era at one time-- and ibrag beats briggs with a smart gameplan and a pathetic performance by briggs, and than ibrag beats holy who is still a game fighter but his reflexes prevent him from being an elite fighter at this point).

obviously it's just my opinion and i could be wrong and perhaps ibrag can somehow be very effective against wlad. being that wlad is a great fighter than i'd have to reevaluate ibrag.

I like you as a poster Deckers, I remember you when I used to post under a different name, but thats be honest here, what Mccall version wasnt under the influence of something in the 90s? Most would say he was on something the night Lewis beat him in 97, the version Douglas beat was the 89 version, cant say he was better or worse then, but I do know he has good power and a iconic chin, which to me is enough to give almost any Heavyweight some trouble in the ring.

tyson didn't build his reputation "fighting" anybody, he buit it absolutely "destroying" a lot of guys not all of which were 'no talent bums' or guys who were too scared to fight back. wlad's a great fighter no doubt, but i wouldn't go raving about his comp being better than tyson's. wlad's greatness is similar to tyson in that, at least with me, I know wlad is probably an ATG (and could beat a lot of other atgs) not just by whom he fought but because of what he has shown in a lot of his fights.

Fair enough - I remember we went more than a few rounds in '07 when I was more active. We had some disagreements, but I don't think we got ugly with each other. Like I've said before, this is entertainment, a hobby to me - nothing more or less. For better or worse I have more than a few hobbies. I've been coming back to ESB more lately. Always a good place to get the lowdown of where to get a net stream for a fight like Pavlik-Taylor 2 :hey

Sure, an in shape, motivated Douglas was a handful. He certainly proved it for at least one nite. You can say similar things about McCall - if he wasn't such a mental case, etc, etc. So I'm agreeing w/you at least partially. But you can also say if LL or Wlad had Chuvalo or Mercer chins, they'd be the 2 best HW of all time - easily. You can play the if game forever, and any way you choose.

The average income guy can say, if I was a better student I'd be a surgeon or high finance guy making several 100K a year. I'm not saying you're better or worse here - it's just that many posters use double standards or exaggerate too much to make a point. I see this to some degree in just about all forums - non sports ones too. Some posters are obvious haters, make **** up, and can't even string together a half ass coherent argument.
