Yes, I know hypothetical matchups are simultaneously addictive and infuriating; but I'm genuinely interested in this because in my opinion only Wlad had a truly fulfilled career - as a result of which we got to see his weaknesses in broad daylight as well as his strengths. Of the 2, I'd say Wlad was the more refined and quite possibly the more talented. But Vitali the tougher, and more unorthodox. There's an opinion floated around here that Vitali is the best H2H in the game, but was he truly tested beyond the Lewis fight? But this isn't about careers, it's about who wins H2H.
wlad proved he could beat better guys, with pov, haye and shaggy being all genuine challengers at least. both proved they could beat a weak titlist in fat sam peter. not much else really to go on. Wlad was better fighter but with that chin you suspect vitali might have flattenedhim at some point. Here is my take - when they were both prime I would say vitali. In their mid30s I would say wlad.
I think Wlad was more the finished product. Greater one punch power, better jab. But Vitali was the more instinctive fighter. A better counter puncher, threw more shots, better chin. Vitali threw a lot of arm punches that weren't as crisp as Wlad's; but that's because he was more willing to engage and counter with those kinds of up close exchanges. Prime for prime, H2H, I'd go Vitali by 8th round KO.
yes prime late 20s, for sure vitali by stoppage, wladdie cannot take pressure. Post prime mid30s, I am not sure if he would cope with wlad having the ref geared towards wlads clinching, adjustment of the ring etc plus vitalis loss of speed since he'd be a little older.
Wlad. Better fundementals. Better defence. Better jab. Dangerous power punches keeping Vitali at bay. Vitali's eyebrowridge, weak facial skin and poor defence (he didnt even have a guard)- against SHW's would be heavily exposed in this machup. RTD due to cuts.
doesnt wlad have the same skin as vit. they are brothers. only one of them faced a surgeon of the ATG level though.
Against small and slow plodders yes. Didnt work against a tall jabber in Lewis. Wlad would be even worse for him exploiting that hole in his game. Also his no guard defence would make him open for Wlads left hook by the jab...
Wlad would never have had the mental strength or the chin to have beaten his older brother. Despite their resumes, Vitali was more formidable.
Vitali didnt have the KO power of Joshua or Sanders. His chin is overrated. Sanders knocked him down and kept him at bay like he would have to against Wlad in all 12 rounds and not just wait for him to gass out like Corrie after 3. No guard overrated chin making a career of bullying short and small plodders unlike Sanders Lewis and definitely Wlad...
Vitali didn't need the raw power of Sanders. He didn't make a career of bullying smaller fighters. He gave Lennox all he could handle, he was winning the fight, and Lennox wanted no part of a rematch. Wlad only has a superior resume because he had 20 more fights due to Vitali's early retirements. Wlad was extremely dangerous when he was younger, and he was more talented than Vitali. But he was never as tough, and those early knockout defeats left him psychologically scarred. He was mentally weak. He was tentative in many of his fights, and we saw Tyson Fury do a complete psyche job on him, both inside and outside of the ring. Looking hypothetically at a scenario where both guys weren't related and they'd have fought, my money would definitely have been on Vitali. Looking hypothetically at a scenario where both brothers had agreed to fight with their family's blessing, it would have been no contest. Because Wlad idolises his big brother and has always looked up to him. In a real life scenario, Wlad would have known that he could never have beaten him. Vitali would always have come out on top by being both mentally and physically stronger.
Vitali. Pros: Great accuracy Stronger chin compared to Wlad Better Stamina Can analyze his opponent during the match and adjust accordingly Calmer than Wlad during the match Cons: Lacks Wlad's KO power Lacks Wlad's ambition Lacks Wlad's legendary defence
