I have taken the initiative to document the clinch stats from the latest Wlad fight. As I began to watch it, I realized by the end of round 3 that the clinching was at a disgraceful level and Wlad should have been penalized and perhaps DQ'd by that point. I restarted the fight with a stopwatch, paper and pen and I took down how many clinches there were per round and the total time spent during the round in a clinch. The results are purely disgraceful. Here goes: Round 1- 14 clinches, 46:92sec total in a clinch 2- 12, 55:36 3- 10, 41:88 4- 14, 56:30 5- 17, 1:03:21 6- 15, 48:08 7- 16, 52:65 8- 17, 1:06:24 9- 17, 49:40 10- 20, 1:06:68 11- 15, 52:21 12- 21, 1:07:24 So that's 188 clinches total, 15.6 clinches per round on average. Time spent clinching: 826 sec, or 13.8min out of 36min, with an average of 68.8sec, 1:08min per round spent clinching. I''ve been a fan of Wlad and have defended him to a point, but Povetkin seemed like he had a chance, he probably would have been beaten anyway, but it was clear Wlad had no interest in actually fighting. I felt so frustrated for Povetkin, who had the right idea- come forward and throw some punches, but the ref allowed it and Wlad was content to spoil and guillotine him every time he got close. What you say to this?
Great fighters are sometimes totally unappreciated in their time. When we look back at the people who prayed for a great white hope to beat Jack Johnson we want to shake them and say “You were lucky enough to be in the presence of a great champion. Were you happier when Tommy Burns was conducting his 17th title defence against Squires?”. What Wlad has done for the sport is unify the titles, and give us a single heavyweight who is unequivocally the best in the world. People often forget the importance of that. I don’t know who you think will take over the division when he retires, or what will happen to the titles, but if it happens any time soon then you will be begging him to come back!
I mentioned it but didn't go into detail about my position on Wlad. I feel the way you do about him, as I've done quite a bit of defending him against people poo-pooing him. I feel he is underrated now as well as underappreciated. I enjoy watching him box in general, even if it is boring at times, I can appreciate his skill and ability. This fight, though, was disgraceful. Unacceptable. To spend literally over 1/3 the time clinching is just plain wrong. Disgraceful behavior for a champion and disgraceful refereeing. I felt myself rooting for poor Povetkin, who could have created some drama, had he been allowed to fight.
I am glad you have done this. The numbers really present to us how bad it is. Now I wouldn't mind if the clinching lead to something, tiring his opponent down and changing his approach later on in the fight. Lewis and Ali clinched, I don't think as much, but then they would turn on their killer instinct. Wlad had no intention of hurting Povetkin. Povetkin didn't look like he was even posing a legitimate threat. Let's compare this to Martinez vs Chavez Jr. Now I know it's unfair to compare because with heavyweights it can be over in just one shot. However, when Martinez was stunned, dropped and injured (his leg), he still refused to clinch against a guy who had around 18lbs and 3" on him. If you're not going to put yourself on the line, then don't be surprised not to gain the respect from your spectators. I'm not bashing the sweet science here, I'm bashing clinching.
There really is no excuse for this performance other than the fact that Wlad cannot box for ****. You try spin it whatever way you want, the fact is Wlad and his team went into this fight with no intention of boxing for the simple fact the chances of getting knocked out played to heavily on their minds. Bashir stated in an interview that the plan was to get through the fight by whatever means necessary and look good in the next one. People say Wlad will become an ATG but he never possessed the quality's of a great fighter in his life. Povetkin was one of the most significant fights of his career and it was won in a display of non boxing by way of corrupted officials. A guy who is afraid to box and who has his fights fixed so he can avoid a fight in the ring is NOT an ATG. Wlad has took this noble art and sweet science that is rich in history and shamed it. When he's gone he's gone because nobody will remember such an uninspiring champion.
So who is going to succeed him as champion and why? Then how will they be better for the division? You see my point?
So you just want to see an individual as a champion and it doesn't matter who or how he fights, just as long as he keeps winning. Thats what you have been saying for a while now and its a load of bullox. Wlad is a cash cow in Germany where he puts on a big event for Germans who know **** about the sport and just turn up to see a spectacle. He will not be allowed lose just like Ottke before him and where is Ottke now? Forgotten.
Wlad is not the only one to blame here. Yeah, he made a point of not taking a single shot. But when Povetkin was walking straight at him and started taking Wlad's jabs, he started bending. In such a way Wlad only could cilnch, cause the trajectory was not comfortable for him. He even tried to do some uppercots, which he never does. But even then he had to bend low himself. That's Povetkin's style to bend and go straight into his opponents. So Wlad did what was necessary. MY OPINION.
I notice that you do not answer either of my questions. My point is that we have a dominant unified champion, and what replaces him is likley to be seriously bad, like as bad as it has ever been.
Somebody should of told Foreman all he had to do was bear hug and jump all over Frazier's back. Why did he even bother to display the skills and passion of an ATG fighter.atsch:nut
You don't get it do you? Wlad imo and many other is the worst HW champ that ever existed. How the hell am I meant to know who is going to come along in the future? It can't be any worse than it is now.
What became obvious to me for the first time is how nonexistent Wlad's defense is. He either jumps\steps straight back or clinches. Absolutely zero blocking or slipping. None. If he isn't allowed to clinch and rely solely on boxing, someone with Povetkin's approach could make a fight of it. Its alarming how unimaginative fighters are nowadays and how poor the trainers are. All fight I kept hoping Povetkin would fire a right to the body under that jab\stiff arm of Wlad as a first punch in a combination. It would have landed repeatedly. And every time a guy steps forward and punches more than twice, Wlad backs straight back, but they stop pursuing! If they kept stepping and punching, they'd be landing punches... That's unless they get clinched. What's frustrating is that Wlad would have won anyway, but it turned into basically cheating. Yes, clinching has its place, as when you're hurt or you need to stop the other guy's rhythm, but there's a point when its too much.
Janitor, we would be left with Some other joker. Someone not as good, and no one is disputing that. Wlad is highly skilled and seasoned, and that makes it worse that he conducted himself like that. I guarantee when he isn't allowed to clinch like that and fights a guy who doesn't stop coming forward and throwing punches, we'll have a new champion.
