Tyson's speed wasn't just handspeed like Haye has. Iron Mike bobbed & weaved and threw quick combinations, Haye just ain't that way. Haye has zero chance against Wladimir, especially since he doesn't have the balls to fight in the first place.
Angles? Movement? Sanders stood in front of Wlad, waiting to him to throw his right and then hammered his own left straight down the middle. No angles here, no constant movement. Not sure what you were seeing.
That doesn't speak very highly of Wlad then. It means that the his defensive flaws came to light when faced with a tall, aggressive, fast opponent.
I'm not sayin that Wlad didn't do what he had to do. While Wlad could have hit Peter with uppercuts when Peter had his head down, I don't think that Wlad is confident enough in his chin to risk doing that, especially when faced against an opponent that has a record of being able to take punishment. And Peter was simply unable to get to Wlad.
He is not the better fighter in the slightest. I do not get how people can think this. Look at the difference in the quality of opposition for a start for the most part. Wlad has dominated the likes of Chageav & Chambers - top 4 HW's at their respective times of fighting him - while Vitali has looked sloppy against the likes of Kevin Johnson and Albert Sosnowski. Wlad is the far, far superior fighter. It's not even close. His ring generalmanship is several notches above Vitali, who actually looks the more panicky of the two whenever he has to readjusted his feet to keep his range. Wlad's control of the range is far better. His jab is so much better it's ridiculous, he can literally control the distance and tempo of a fight off that alone, as well as defend himself just with the jab and his timing and ability to judge the distance. Not to mention he sets up punches better. His punching form is so, so much better aswell. He is very as sloppy with his punches as Vitali is. His jab is sharp, crisp and clean. His right hand is text-book everytime he throws it, completely straight and accurate as hell. His left-hook is far better, so are his uppercuts and also the way he can switch down to the body when needs be with a lead right hook. I don't know what more needs to be said. He's far superior in every technical department, be it his punching form, range control, his variety of punches, his timing, accuracy. Plus he's quicker, has much better footwork, is smarter and much more powerful. The only thing Vitali has over Wlad is his punch resistance. Although Wlad's chin is not as bad as people make out, nor is Vitali's as great as everyone seems to think. If they ever fought, Wlad would rip Vitali to shreds and end up with a late stoppage.
Wlad was very amateurish and overconfident against Sanders, he payed the price, he moved on. He doesn't just open up and certainly doesn't open himself up needlessly anymore against a solid jawed opponent. But just because he's not throwing punches or taking shots on his guard doesn't mean he's not 'working', Wlad's defense is just as much forcing his opponent to work for every inch, mentally and physically, by offering no holes and constantly threatening with retaliation as it is protecting himself and clinching at the right moments.
Chambers would have stayed a crusierweight in the 80's and 90's. Chagaev fights like he's still in the amateurs. Let's be honest about his opposition. They are just not very good. Now, you obviously have to give credit to Wlad for handling his opposition the way he has, but until he either fights his brother or Haye, I can't think of any great fighter on his record.
But who has he fought that is anything Similiar to Sanders since? I mean, to be honest, I think Briggs is a more credible opponent by far than Peter because even if he isn't the same guy that fought Lennox by a long shot, he's still has height, speed, aggression, and toughness, that Wlad has yet to deal with since his loss to Sanders. It aggrivates me that Vitali is taking him on instead. It seems like Vitali takes on anyone that poses a threat to Wlad.
I was reasserting the fact that Wlad is both the far superior fighter and has beaten the far superior opposition. If his opposition is 'just not very good', what is Vitali's then? Absolutely dreadful. The likes of Chageav and Ibragimov are under-rated within todays era. Both combine okay size [both about 6'2" and 220-230lbs], cagey southpaw styles, decent speed and solid technical skills. They would be a handful for a few I reckon, Wlad just made them look rather ordinary because stylistically he had a big advantage and he implemented them well.
For the people that say Wladimir has no flaws, you really need to keep your bias in check. From a PFP skill level perspective, Wlad is definitely not in the top 10. And while it's easy to attribute this to his size, Dawson has no problem looking very similiar to a Mayweather style fighter, and on the other side of the spectrum, featherweight Donaire doesn't look bad either. These are guys that have an entire arsenal of offensive weapons, and do not look incredibly vulnerable IF they would actually have a live opponent in front of them with their defense either. In fact, all three have very good to excellent defense. Wlad has a lot of flaws. You can choose not to address these flaws because there isn't anyone that can presently test him, but at the same time, Wlad tends to fight people that have no chance to begin with. Look at Vitali fighting Valuev and Briggs for example. Wlad couldn't use his current style of defense against Valuev because Valuev has longer reach, and is the bigger heavier opponent and can would be able to use his strength against Wlad. Briggs, while obviously a SHELL of his former self still possess fast hands, aggression, and the willingness to get in there and throw it out, ALONG WITH SIZE. Who's fighting these guys? Not Wlad. Vitali. Vitali is the true warrior. And the guy that has the ability to adapt to his opponent and can use more than one style to the job done. He's not as fast as Wlad, but he's more confident and relaxed. Wlad has flaws, but until there is an opponent in front of him that can exploit these, he will continue to win, which is what he should do. But make no mistake about it, his entire style is predicated around protecting his chin and keeping his opponents at range. What will happen when someone can get to his chin? How will Wlad react when Haye hits his chin? Then again, Haye needs to find his balls first.
- Nobody said Wlad has no flaws. - Wlad tends to fight people that have no chance? ANd then you say his brother does in fighting the mighty Briggs? Or in trying to fight the sweet Valuev? Or maybe you forgot to name Sosnowski? (sorry can't even recall his name)? Both are not fighting people that can beat them because...there are NONE. Wlad wouldn't even be able to miss Briggs or Valuev's head.
