IF... Wlad was to win the rematch against Fury and then unify consequatively against Joshua and then Wilder and then retire; where would he rank for you as an ATG Heavyweight?
He is a top 10 ATG for HW and nothing would change that for me. He was dominant for 12 years and beat the top 2 guys of this era in Povetkin and Haye. We can bash the opposition all we want, but answer this one question: Why is it that as soon as someone picks up a belt like Wilder, Martin, Joshua, etc, we want to praise them? Simple answer, we get bored of repetition. It goes to show how hard it is to be dominant for that long. If he were to unify the titles I would move him up to around 6 or 7 probably. Considering his age, that would be a feat that will probably never be matched.
To know where Wlad truly ranks we would have to wait 30 years until after he has retired. As we can see now how the Ali era fighters are at the peak of being massively overrated based on what they actually did in the ring. At the 35 year point after they had all retired those Ali era fighters, are at the maximum of their ratings in relation to fighters from other eras. Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano and Dempsey are now under rated compared to how they were in the past, because significant time has elapsed since they retired and very few people alive ever saw them fight live. An intellectual unbias boxing observer may well rate him in the top 5 of all time at HW, 30 years after he has retired. His sheer dominance round by round, never losing a round for years, has not been repeated by any other HW who has been the undisputed HW champion ever. However his weaknesses were glaring in terms of styles and ability to vary his style, and his punch resistance, and this bumps him down the rankings.
Vlad is agreat fighter, I think he will stop Fury in the rematch...................if he does, he will also stop Wilder easily and AJ...............
curious as to how intellectual you need to be to put a guy who when prime gets easily killed by serial bums, next to unbeaten Marciano, atgkiller ali and number 1 Louis? its some kinda intellect way beyond mine for sure
Its the reality of how most fighters get ranked over time How fighters get ranked over time and when they get most highly ranked is relevant to all discussions on ATG ratings. Especially for active fighters. If you had asked someone in 1970 who the ATG at HW was. Joe Louis was number 1 with Jack Dempsey at 2 or 3. My grandad agreed with this ranking. Where does Louis and Dempsey rank today? Jack Dempsey often does not even make the top 10 thanks to the passage of time...
He's borderline top 10 for me now, based on his sheer dominance and longevity. Should he regain the title and then defend twice more and actually unifying that would bump him up at least another spot or 2 just for finally becoming undisputed champion and holding all the major belts. But we'd have to see how Fury, Wilder and Joshua afterwards to really ascertain it's true significance though. Also the initial loss to Fury and what little damage to his legacy that did would we wiped clean if Fury is banned, nobody can judge that loss as genuine if Fury is found to be a doper, tarnishing that win, so therefore raising his standing even higher.
He's definitely top 10, likely top 5 for me already. He lost when he was old. Therefore it doesn't count against him to me. Marciano retired when he was like 32. Rocky's early death aside, surely he would've lost if he boxed until he was 39 like Wlad. And if Wlad did all that? Beat Fury, Wilder, and Joshua? Then for sure top 5. Maybe even number 1.
