I think Cooney (early 80s) takes this one. He has the size, the skill and the power to take Klitchko out. In fact, I think he is one of the most obvious guys I could pick to KO him. Am I nuts? - Jason
haha :rofl thats to good...but i really think wlad would take it so slow and has the size and power to take a SD
Agreed. Cooney is grossly underrated today, in part because he was never the same after he fought Holmes. At his best he was a destroyer, and had a better chin. He would steamroll Wlad early.
This could go either way truthfully. Cooney held his own for most of 13 rounds against a peak Holmes who in my opinion, had far better ring generalship, stamina, and overall toughness in terms of being able to take a big shot. Cooney however, was tagged often by that big jab of Holmes which Wlad may not be quite so polished at throwing, but is certainly servicable and having a tad more snap. Cooney's mental resolve was never the greatest and in fact, was his greatest downfall. Wlad on the otherhand is not exactly the spokes person for having the heart of a lion either though. I guess the real issue that makes me lean toward Gerry in this match, is the fact that Klitschko has a recurring problem with getting decked, staggered or Ko'd by left hooks. Cooney had a very finely honed left hook that some experts say make the all time great puncher's list ( source needed ). I can't help but remembering how badly beaten to the punch Wlad was by Corrie Sanders, who by that point was 37 years old and hadn't fought much in recent years. A 25 year old Cooney who stood 6'7", weighed 228 Lbs, was undefeated, and had a left that was every bit as powerful as any Wlad has ever been hit by is bad news for Klitschko. Cooney by mid round stoppage or ko due to stylistic advantages.....
Thanks for the responses guys. I just watched round 13 of Holmes/Cooney (where Cooney gets beat) on YouTube and I am more convinced then ever. This is a level of athleticism in boxing that doesn't exist today. Cooney was an excellent fighter with size and power who simply wasn't as good as the outstanding champion of his era.
brewster purrity williamson peter all decked Klit Of course Corrie beat him like an ginger stepson, but its not as though it was a one-off stylistic fluke, lots of of people deck Klit
