A short hypothesis and a thought that you should perhaps digest and ruminate over before voicing an opinion. For all of our frustrations with WK's safety first boxing style he has become the king of the hill through consistently, and over a long period of time, winning his fights. We boxing fans know who is the heavyweight champion. My angel angle is that he refuses to engage in immoral talk and resolutely sets himself as a role model. He is of course no novice when it comes to controlling others and being fairly Machiavellian. I'm sure it is infuriating to his competitors but in the ruthless world of any business you sometimes have to look out for yourself and your team. There will always be others criticising you but you have to stick to your path and your dreams in order to succeed. So it occurred to me that, like Lennox Lewis, he is THE heavy weight champion and we could and should be happy to have him stabilising the division from the top down. This runs alongside my frustrations with him as a performer. With his physique, movie star looks, obvious varied skills which he under uses, we can become upset that he does not take more risks during fights and so really shine like the greats of yesteryear! Nevertheless, he offers us boxing fans a focus point and the eye of the storm in the crazy and beautiful world of pugilism. A world that if it did not exist; I suspect that many of us would be mightily morose! A boxing fan.
He is a good role model, a skilled big heavyweight, clearly the man in the heavyweight division but his style is soooooo frustrating to watch especially when you consider that he could probably blow out half the division out in one go. But i guess this is boxing, i won't judge a fighter for being a safety first fighter especially if he is making the money wlad makes.
he's pretty good. no one seems to be able to beat him or even come close. he put his college degree to use and uses his head on hit and not be hit.
he seems like a decent person...not someone i would pick as a role model. as a boxer he's fortunate to be around during the absolute weakest era ever in heavyweight boxing...and still got Ko'd by purrity, corey sanders and lamon brewster, got bashed around like a rag doll against ole sam peter and had to be rescued against davarryl williamson...he's a garbage fighter.
maybe you missed the part where he redefined himself after getting destroyed twice...and then made his comeback against sam peter, who was the most notorious puncher in the division at the time i'll never understand how anyone can belittle a man who gets KO'd in the worst possible way, but manages to redefine himself, change his fighting style, and become EASILY the best HW of his era
Apparently, after his devasting loss to Lamon BRewster or was it COrrie Sanders, his brother VItali advised him to retire from boxing. It amazed me the fortitude he must have had to have carried on so successfully. To remain so discipline day in and day out. To be able overcome his fears and proceed to shine so brightly. Think of the times when we have crumpled under pressure: given in to peer pressure, not gone for a job because we didn't think we were good enough, been too scared to love someone, from our parents to a partner, because we feared being rejected. Anyone who has the singleminded belief in themselves, and least we forget we are born alone and we will die alone unless you believe in God, to carry out their ambitions when all else around them is trying to pull them down; then they are an object of my admiration at least. When I have been through difficult times, when I have been so frightened that I wanted to flee and hide, I often think about that man on earth called Jesus; who resented the temptation of the devil on so many occasion and persevered on his mission to bring the gospel to our ears. He continued even knowing he would die and continued through the pain and terror of his crucifixion. I remembered his example of bravery and it helped me through difficult times. I wonder how WK found the belief? To belittle the above; perhaps he is just simply deeply egotistical, controlling and a megalomanic who must dominate and succeed at any cost which is the fuel he needs to drive himself through any barrier. Maybe even he does not know himself. Who the hell does know himself. Apologies for this early morning tangent on philosophy but goddam I love boxing! Peace to you all.
I'd say that for how bad he has been treated, he's even too good and kind. The major reason for his style is the two losses he has suffered and that could have been easily avoided just playing a little more carefully.
People said the same about Louis, Marciano, Tyson and Holmes when they were champions. History will look kindly upon Wlad.
hope so, because history will also see him as the first 'dominant' champ to run in fear from a 38 year old retiree no-hoper who destroyed him a few months earlier. history NEEDS to be kind to that level of ability and acknowledge that wouldn't happen to Louis, Marciano or holmes in their wildest dreams. history will also respect him for being part of the same family that shared HW titles between them, though, thats unique and very impressive, dimmed by the history of their abject tag teaming. A decent image is also valued, not just in this day and age where style supercedes substance, but its good for boxing's image to non fans.
you mean if he'd fought more people below the ability of a 37 year old finished never-hoper? I am not sure you could get away with watering down a world title to below subnational level that much even to his most zealous fans.
For a big number of Brits and Americans Wlad is the devil incarnate rather than an angel :!: He denied those two nations from getting a champion for a decade and single handedly prevented a golden HW era.
True, just to know if there's not another good American heavyweight for the next 50 years, is the division going to be classed as being on a 65 year all time time low?
yes, instead he single handedly handed a 37 year old subnational retiree his title. didn't singlehandedly win it back though. he didn't win it back from him at all. brits don't even get world champions at hw hardly ever, they stop themselves getting them, no help needed there. lennox and Bruno were the first in almost a century, and Hide, lets not mention his wbogus title.
