Joe didn't need a clinch, he has more title defenses than Wlad (25 to 18). Also, Wlad was never the undisputed champion, and Joe was always the undisputed champion. If "Wlad's new Joe" is, then Wlad is not a worthy successor. Holmes, with 20 title defenses, was also never the undisputed champion. Holmes legitimately became the lineal champion, and Wlad had to become one in the fight with Chagaev when creating the "new line"; different stories.
He was right. Even if they fought you'd know they wouldn't be going all out and we'd be questioning if they rigged it and predetermined who'd win. A fight between them wasn't going to prove anything they'd have done a glorified sparring session.
Not boxing problem. Thats their problem. The best didnt fight each other, period. So as for as historical rankings like the other poster pointed out , he suffers for it.
Wlad and Vitalis SOS left no confusion who the "real champ" was and perhaps that was a bit on purpose so people wouldn't demand them to fight. Wlad fought the elite competition while Vitalis 2nd reign competition was terrible. Vitali suffers for that. But Wlad? Wlad fought everyone else except Valuev who lost his big fights to Chagaev and Haye. Its not really reasonable to hold not fighting Vitali against him. People hold Wlads early losses against him, not fighting Vitali? If they fought it'd only produce more questions not answers. One wasn't going up there and dominating that fight and if you actually expected them to get in the ring and try to hurt each other out you're being unreasonable.
