Vitlai retired Lewis because Lewis had to fight him again or lose his title. Lewis won on a cut, not on points. Vitlai would have likely won the rematch, which is why Lewis turned down a $15,000,000.00 offer. That is an insane amount of money for a prize fight.

Regarding Lewis vs Wlad, I'd favor Lewis, but it could go either way. Whomever lands one of their best shot first is likely to win. IMO, Wlad is faster, with his hands and feet. Lewis has more early confience. Its a 60/40 fight in favor of Lewis, but really either guy could win.

Lewis was KO'd by ONE punch by the likes of McCall and Rhaman. Wlad has better speed, skill, size, and power than those two. Lewis was also in trouble vs Bruno until a hail mary left hook with his eyes closed thrown while moving backwards Ko'd Bruno.

 

Yes, you're right, the VITLAY fight didn't count because Lewis won via stoppage and not on points. This coming from the man that places such huge stock in VITLAYS own KO percentage. I guess all those wins should be declared null and void too, seeing as he achieved them by punching his opponent, the cheating **** :nut

Lewis beat him because he smashed his face to pieces by landing the bigger punches. There wasn't "a cut" there were two huge gashes on the eyelid, so bad and so near to joining together that his eyelid was likely to fall off if Lewis landed a few more on it, his cheek was gashed badly, I believe he was cut inside the mouth as well. Klitschko put up a very good fight to his credit but the tide had turned after the first three rounds and he lost fair and square. I just don't the attitude that some people on here have (not meaning yourself necessarily, I don't know your opinion on the matter) that it was pure luck that lewis caused "a cut", there was all sorts of rubbish coming from certain people about using the laces, even about Lewis' hair cutting the skin open. Let's assume it was a lucky shot, certainly it was a glancing punch that opened the first cut but how do we account for the other five or six? Lewis had turned the fight around, Klitschko was almost ko'd in the sixth, had seemingly run out of ideas, his face looking like a predator's mouth.
Lewis won the fight end of story because he did more damage to Klitschko than Klitschko did to him.

I agree with you that Klitschko probably would have won a rematch but lewis was getting old and did the smart thing in retiring imo. Prime for Prime, Lewis is a better fighter than either of the Klitschko's.

 

Lewis TKO6 Klitschko, can we please move on? it's been how many years now...

Good post. Mendoza is obviously one of the nuthuggers who refuses to accept a legit loss. And you're right - it was far more than one cut. Klitschko was administered as many stitches after that fight as any boxer in the history of the sport. 60 alone just to deal with that eyelid. Then factor the gruesome damage below that eye, to his cheekbone area, his lip, and apparently some of the worst cuts were unseen and inside his mouth. Check out how much blood he is gulping during the Merchant interview.

To think Lewis did all that with his dreads is simply amazing. Good thing he didn't use his fists, given his power and skill.

Some of those shots he landed on Klitschko were thunderous, and that uppercut that had Vitali clinching for the better part of 1:30 afterwards is likely what destroyed the inside of his mouth.

That uppercut was unreal.Not sure how he stayed up after taking that.Give him credit he has an iron chin and is tough,maybe too tough for his own good in this case.If this fight had of gone another round or two,not only would Lewis have won anyway,but VK would have been lucky to have boxed again with that amount of damage

I don't think that would go down too well with a certain section of this forum.I actually meant to say had the fight gone on not had it gone a couple more rounds but anyway,despite facial damage,Lewis was getting to VK by round 6.I just wish some people could accept defeat on here.
