Firstly, there is a huge difference between northern italians and their southern brethren. Having spent a large amount of time in Italy for my job, I can attest to southern Italians as being shorter than most Euros. The average height of a southern Italian male is 5 foot 8. That is TODAY.

Secondly, Marciano was not Italian. He had access to US markets, a veritable breadbasket where famine is unheard of and hunger relatively scarce. His mother's stature attests to there being no lack of food in the house. And he had US health care, probably the top in the world during his life. He was given every advantage to reach his full height. His father was a wee fellow and it just wasn't in the genetic cards.

Outside of lowering puberty ages and obesity caused by an overabundance of fatty meats, this had no effect of height.

Again, I have quoted stats. Height in the US has changed very little in the three or so generations since Marciano. He was a smallish man of smallish stock. He was well fed, given 20th century health care. We saw exactly how big that man was to be.

I don't think I am going too far out on a limb to suggest he had better nutrition and health care than Sonny Liston or Joe Louis.

 

Louis woulda been 6'6. Liston woulda been 6'11.

 

You are looking at a legit 7'2 for Joe and Sonny with ye olde modern nutrition.
