Good call. Some hold Klitschko to a standard that is impossible to measure up to. In truth, even Ali, Louis, and Holmes had worse performances vs lesser guys than Thompson or Ibragimov.

One problem with the high ratings for Sanders and Brewster is that they were largely based on ko'ing Wlad.

As for Wlad's performance against Thompson, I thought he showed quite a bit. He has good movement for such a big man, is obviously very strong, certainly has a good defense. I liked the way he went to the body and his stamina seemed much better than in some of his earlier fights. He had enough left to pick it up in the 11th round and did not seem at all spent at the end.
The downside was the poor inside fighting skills. He just grabbed and the referee seemed to cut the action pretty quick. I would also have some doubts about his punching power at this time. He did not seem to hurt Ibragamov with some clean shots and Thompson also ate quite a few direct hits without being visibly hurt. Wlad did, of course, knock him out cleanly in the 11th, but Thompson appeared to be looking for a way to quit after Wlad fell on him at the end of the 10th. Thompson might be durable, but how durable is somewhat quesswork as he had never been in with a big puncher before Wlad.

Well I am up at 2.55am working because my wife woke me up and I couldn't get back to sleep, oh well. I think this was the first free to air boxing in over fifteen years in Australia, but if Wlad and Vit fight in germany it would be unlikely because of the time difference and their limited appeal here that they would be offered on pay per view, lets face it who is going to pay the money to watch this sort of fight at 4am so we may get some more free to air, I hope so you will just have to stay up a bit later JT.

The Brewster and Sanders who fought Wlad were the best versions of the two. We know this in hindsight based on their performances.

I do not see how you question Wlad's power. Thompson was never stopped or as far as I know down until last Saturday night. Wlad did land his best stuff toward the end, though he did land solidly.

Honestly, Wlad does not seem to need to land his best that often for the other guy to go. I have seen guys like Marciano, and Frazier land many flush power shots on their opponents before they went.

"I have seen guys like Marciano, and Frazier, land many flush power shots on their opponents before they went."

And you have started thread after thread questioning their power. I still say it is still somewhat up in the air how durable Thompson is, and I, at least, wonder if Wlad is losing his punch.

Power is the last thing to go. Wlad is 32, and still in his prime. I don’t see Wlad losing any of his power. Wlad might have floored Thompson in round two ( HBO blew the replay ) and put Thompson down face first in round 11. Thompson’s style threw Wlad off a bit. It took Wlad a while to figure out where to land, but once he did we saw what happened.

Thompson has been in there with many top fighters as a sparring partner. Until someone else starches Thompson, I think it is safe to say he can take a good shot.

I was thinking the same thing actually, even though it's hard to believe. Well, not that he is anything less than a very hard puncher, but maybe a little less so than he used to be. It is a change for the better however, because he has much better stamina now.

It could be perception, however. Perhaps he used to sit down more on them. And the last two fights, he's shown the bad habit to immediatly tie the opponent up after he hits them. That basically limits stoppages to one-punch knockouts, of which even the biggest punchers only have a few in their entire career.

I remember thinking during the fight that he did lose a step and looked clumsy/disorganised more than he has in the past against better opposition. But it's hard to tell considering the fact that Thompson is a big, akward southpaw who has never tasted the canvas before. We'll see against Povetkin come november.
