Stop pretending like Holyfield didn't have heart failure and that he didn't drop Moorer five times and stop him in the rematch. Hasim Rahman has a better resume at heavyweight than Moorer.
The problem with Moorer is that he is so totally lacking in quality wins outside of the Holyfield fight. I don't see a single top 10 heavy on his resume outside Holyfield and realistically without that win you could argue he doesn't crack the top 100, maybe not even the top 200 all time. Larry Donald would be favored to beat everyone else on Moorer's heavyweight resume that's how bad it is bar the Holyfield fight. We need a bit more in terms of quality wins I think to favor him over Povetkin or Chagaev.
Byrd is a better HW win then Moorer. Although not as powerful or offensively dangerous or skilled. Byrd had chin, massive balls and better IQ and mental strength. The 3 things you need to survive in the HW division as a smaller man. Also Byrd was a ultra focused rabbit on form.
I have no doubt in my mind, Prime Povetkin beats Prime Moorer by KO inside 8. Id favour Moorer over Chagaev (quicker hands, neither had quick feet) , but it would be a torrid fight.
Pretty interesting point. Rahman having both Lewis and Sanders on his schedule is quite unique, and definitely shines more than Moorer having only B+ names like Stewart, Schulz, Jirov, Cooper, and Botha.
Yep, Rahman could have had a really good resume if he'd put in maximum effort for every bout. But unfortunately he tended to blow hot and cold.
The draw with Tua, blowout of Meehan, and win over Barrett were also alright. Imagine Moorer getting a draw against any version of Tua.
Yeah, I forgot he avenged the loss to Tua to a degree. Moorer could probably beat some slicker boxers that might outmaneuver Rahman I reckon.
He might have been able to do better against a past prime Toney or Oleg Maskaev, but he didn’t fight them either and Corrie Sanders or Tua potentially would’ve derailed his career if he took Rahman’s path.
Moorer was one of the most well-schooled and technically sound operators around - an exemplar of the Boxer-Puncher style. As you suggest, he was offensively-minded, looked good on the attack but like most, aggressive Boxer-Punchers, put himself at risk if he had a plan to, as you put it, brawl. Had he been able to break that pattern on occasion, to pursue alternative, more defensive strategies with discipline (which he was more than capable of doing), his story might well have been written much differently.
