I haven't read too many reports from Povetkin's camp, which is kinda silly because I'm pretty sure I know one guy who is still close to it. If he's sharp and trained, it will be a good fight. He's a born fighter with a lot of skill. If he's a fat slob, Wlad will steamroll him. The other x-factor is that Wlad isn't getting any younger, or any better. He is, at best, sustaining. So, it has the potential to be a very good fight. The onus is Povetkin to arrive in shape.

And Houdini, lots of guys on this board have a long, intimate history with the sport. I've been watching the sport for over 30 years. The 90's were my heyday and I was at a fair share of the fights and met a lot of the important people, lucky enough to interview some big names, too. Your condescension is misaimed but I am sure it will maintain consistency.

    Enjoy the fights.

I agree with Houdini that this is anything but a superfight. I sincerely hope I am wrong.

Going off the intensity he fought for his gold medal , i expect him to perform to the same level for the biggest fight of his life. There's no way he's coming to fight without being in his best possible shape after 23 million being put up for him. He has the skills and should at some point time Wlads straight shots to land a counter hook and or straight right. Looking forward to it.

2007 version of Wlad is just Wlad who fought weaker opponents. Wlad is Wlad.

Steward just masked his weaknesess and thought him to to bear hug everybody who got close to him. It works for him against the weakest guys in a poor division. He has yet to fight or beat the best guys.

    Best guys? :patsch

Haye was ranked # 2 in the division, was seen as the biggest threat out there by far

Chagaev was undefeated WBA champion, ranked # 3, the fight was for the vacant lineal title

Ibragimov was undefeated ranked # 3 and was the WBO heavyweight champion, unification match.

And now he is fighting undefeated olympic gold medalist povetkin, rated # 2

Who are these best guys you are talking about?

Pulev? He isn't any better than the above men listed, not to mention he said he needs 2-3 more fights before being ready for Wlad.

Fury? He is going to get his head knocked off soon by one of Wlads victims

Wilder? the man who is fighting cab drivers? :rofl

There is no such thing as a vacant lineal title. You win it from the lineal champ. How does beating Chagaev earn you the linear HW crown whan he was banned from boxing everywhere except Germany and never beat anybody in his career?
The best man his own size he ever fought blew him out in the second round.
Iggy made a decision to quit boxing before he foughht Wlad due to islamic reasons and didn't come to win. That fight killed HW boxing for a time. I fail to see how that can be seen a a good win.
Vitali, Povetkin, Pulev and Fury are the best guys in the division.

Oh really? Fury is better than Haye? Can't wait until Haye knocks Fury out Feb 8th. I do think Fury is legit though, he will fight Wlad in the future.

Pulev has openly stated he is not ready for Wlad yet. He said he needs 2-3 more fights. Wlad will demolish Pulev when they eventually do fight. Haye would beat pulev too.

    Vitali is Wlad's brother

Povetkin is about to become a Wlad victim

So Moore vs Patterson wasn't for the title in 1956?

When the champ retires(Lennox Lewis) it becomes vacant. Ring Magazine and every other major boxing organization officially declared the winner of # 1 Wlad vs # 3 Chagaev to be for linear title

It was the first heavyweight unification match in almost 10 years. Iggy was a silver medalist in olympics and undefeated champion, ranked top 5 by ring magazine.

I hope it's a good fight, but I see another boring fight. the refs let wlad get away with murder with his grabbing, he has to be hit from long range.

Im convinced Fury will blow out Haye and Manny told Wlad himself Fury was a treat to him.

If lineage is possible to become vacant then Rahmam took it when Vitali relinquished it and it passed hands till Vitali fought for it and won it again, therefor the linear crown is resting with Vitali in semi-retirement.
It doesn't go up for grabs in a fight that was rejected by HBO.
Rankings mean little in a dead division. Somebody has to be up there.

The lineal title certainly can become vacant. When Jeffries retired the title was vacant until Root and Hart fought to claim that title. Tunney retired and the bout between Schmeling and Sharkey decided the new champion. you get the idea. What needs to be understood is deciding who the next lineal champion is may not be that cut and dry. As an example Holmes became the new lineal champion after Ali retired on the strength of his victory over no 1 ranked Norton and then beating the unretired Ali. Throw in a victory over highly ranked Shavers and the sum of the parts gives him the title in a world of corrupt commissions and multiple title holders.

Another point is that the title has to be bestowed upon the rightful fighter once it becomes vacant due to a retirement. this way the lineage in effect is preserved by ensuring the most deserving hwt is termed the next true champion. This is why calling John Tate champion, when Holmes has wins over Ali, Norton and Shavers, is a joke.
