That's not exactly what Mormeck is doing. Rather, he's use the elbows and forearms like a bulldozer, without punching. That's turning the fight into a rugby match.
Mormeck is rough but him not throwing punches is something which hurts him. He isn't swinging elbows or purposefully trying to hurt his opponent with forearms. He's just walking forward because he doesn't know how to work his way onto the inside, a technical fault. However, it's not an illegal tactic. It may be awkward but it's to his own detriment. There is nothing in any boxing rule book which says that you can't walk forward with a high guard. To suggest it's illegal is strange.
And that's his choice. It's not illegal to do that. It's just horrible technique on his part that his opponents should counter with an uppercut, like Haye did. It's not illegal though. He's well within his rights to walk forward with a high guard. The only time I've ever heard this complaint before, was when Khan mentioned it about Peterson and, like I said, it was a comment that was rightly laughed at.
How many dozens of times did Mormeck grab Oquendo and Ibragimov, without getting a single warning? Note that both fights took place in Paris. This Mormeck is one the biggest cheaters seen in boxing in recent years. He breaks the rules, his opponents break the rules in return. That's always the formula when Mormeck fights. More often than not, Mormeck's style is catalyst here.
If I wanted to get fussy, I could break out a rule book and show that this tactic -- manhandling -- is just as forbidden as holding. But sane fans and refs generally don't make a big deal of it.
Mormeck didn't initiate any of the 16 clinches in the first round against Wlad, nor did he do anything illegal causing Wlad to hold onto him. He may have a dirty, ugly style but that doesn't mean his opposition can cheat against him.
manhandling isn't what we're talking about here though. That's proper rough house tactics, not just walking forward with a high guard which will always lead to elbow and forearm clashes.
Wrong. Mormeck gets inside this way, then bulldozes his opponents backward -- usually forearms/elbows pushing violently against the chest -- then Mormeck scores with a punch or two. By then, the ref usually steps in to break the guys up. Watch Mormeck's fights against Oquendo and Ibragimov in slow motion, you'll see what I mean. It's illegal manhandling. Not so awful as to demand a reprimand, but at the same time, it's exactly the sort of thing that invites a counterpush or counterhold in return.
Vlad did the right thing by clinching the 16 times Mormeck played rugby. I applaud for the ref for his tolerance, for his understanding that Mormeck was triggering these encounters.
You're allowed to push your opponent back, with a punch or without. There's nothing in the rules to say that you can't "bulldoze" an opponent. If that's what Mormeck wants to do, that's his choice. It's a poor tactic but it's not an illegal one. If he is purposefully using his head, physically pushing like Khan did against Peterson, elbowing or anything like that, it's illegal. Walking an opponent down and being physical is all part of the game. It's a fight! If you stopped this sort of stuff, 90% of good fights in boxing history would be full of point deductions.
The referee was factually biased. Wlad held 4 times and was warned. He held 7 more times and was given a second, and final, warning. He then continued to hold and the referee continued to warn him! That's not the way referees should do their job. A warning is exactly that - a warning that if the tactic is continuously used, a point deduction will take place. A referee can't give 10, 20 or 30 "warnings" without following up with some sort of punishment. The rules state that excessive holding should be punished. Wlad held excessively.
If Mormeck likes to fight this way, then let him come over to the U.S., where our refs will let him roughouse, elbow, and foul all he wants. Only problem is, when his opponent do similar stuff in return, Mormeck will not get any protection. He will get held...he will get his ugly cheating head shoved down...he will get pushed backward. He will get hit on the break, too. Today's officiating was a fit and proper finale to the string off disgraceful refereeing jobs Mormeck has benefitted from in recent years. No more Paris for Mormeck. You can't go home again, as they say.
I never saw you out here bitching after Mormeck's fake "victories" in Paris, where he fouled his opponents all he wanted with nary a warning.
I thought it was a bit ridiculous when Wlad was clinching before Mormeck even through a punch. he was grabbing a man that wasn't even trying to hit him. He should have put his foot on the pedal and blasted Jean Mark out in the first round.
