I agree with you. In fact, that's my main problem with Rahman- there's not much you can do about a glass chin in and of itself....but it wouldn't hurt if he used his orangutang-like reach to jab the hell out of people to stop them from getting in range to knock him out, either.
You realize that James "Buster" Douglas actually KO'd someone with a jab before? Not sure which fight (maybe someone else on here might know), but they were talking with him about it on FSN before one of their fights (he was the guest commentator). Go watch any of his fights pre-Holyfield and you will be SHOCKED at how powerful and perfectly timed it was. Its honestly the most underrated punch in history....everyone when thinking of Buster think about either the Tyson upset or the Holyfield ALL YOU CAN EAT body & KO. But seriously, it was devastating. In terms of Speed Ali had the best one. In terms of overall jab....it is easily Holmes. In terms of power its Douglas. Too bad he will always be remembered for the upset or the jaba the hutt training regimine he went through before the Evander fight. Wlad's is fast, powerful and it sets up everything he does so well....but the best EVER.....you need to do your homework on that one.
WALDO has the best jab in HW boxing at the moment but best ever? **** no. Several fighters that I can think of were better jabbers, and did better jobs of keeping better comp at bay that WALDO does. Let's not forget the 2 devastating losses to Sanders and Brewster (we'll forgive him the Purrity fight) No way would that **** ever have happened to Ali, Louis, Lewis, Holmes (ESPECIALLY HOLMES!) Douglas, Liston, hell even Bruno I'd say has a better jab than WALDO in that he kept Lewis at bay for a few rounds with it.
1. Out jabbing a fast southpaw is unlikely but he Klicko used his jab effectively against elusive Chris Byrd. I'd have to see the other legendary jabbers do something similar e.g. Ali jab the hell out of Jimmy Young ( I don't think that happend ). 2. Klicko was jabbing the hell out of Brewster and Purrity until running out of steam. 3. Klicko can work his jab from angles and vary the speed on it. Some powerful jabber types never had that kind of finesse. Strong punch, yes, but could not land it as consistently.
In terms of speed, Ali is correct. Holmes' is fast, and is a bit of a punch too. In terms of power, I would go with Foreman. Liston is still on the power side, but seems to have a little more snap. Buster Douglas does have an exceptional jab, I don't think it is the most powerful ever. It was good in every way, though. I still believe Louis' was better, in the same regard. Power, speed, snap. I do feel like Wlad's jab has the most resemblance to Louis' of any big man I have seen. It isn't the same as Louis', only similar in balance of speed, power, and snap.
First Byrd wasnt trying to be elusive in that fight...if you remember, his game plan was to muscle his way in and fight Wlad there (one of the worst ideas I have ever seen). Second, ANYONE CAN JAB THE HELL OUT OF BREWSTER.....that is like beating a one legged man in a race....then bragging about it. Brewster is one of the least elusive fighters in the division. Third, I think Wlad's jab is unbelievable. Its fast, strong and sets everything up perfectly. BUT, Holmes (who I believe, as most do, had the best jab ever) and Ali's were better overall jabs. And as I said....Douglas' was much more powerful. None of the above taking anything away from how potent a weapon Wlad's jab is....just putting it all in better perspective.
Klicko has a tendency to sort of hypnotize opponents with his jab. His left hand is in constant motion, like a swaying cobra, always finding an angle for his opponent to worry about always changing speeds. I think he probably can hit harder with it than what he usually does but I think his personal philosophy of jabbing is more like a tactical weapon than heavy artillery.
