Unlike Wladimir, we the fans, can look past Fury and speculate his next opponent. We know that Boente had dealings with Briggs for this fall should the Fury bout fall thru, and I truly believe Wlad was gonna go head and fight him, just for the publicity. That said, there are close to 1/2 dozen fighters who are right on the cusp of a title fight, and Wlad will obviously have to fight one of them in the Spring or late Winter in order to maintain his 3 fight/yr average and have a legitimate chance of breaking Joe Louis record. So, let's lay it out and speculate assuming Fury dont upset the apple cart. 1. Czar Glaskov, commonly referred to, and rightly so, as Giftkov. Glaskov has the IBF #1 spot, but even the IBF dont want him to get a shot, and seem poised on enforcing another eliminator on him. His best wins are gifts over USS, Rossy, a gift draw with Scott, and a fight with a faded Adamek that he nearly gave away in the last 4 rds. His recent LOC, includes Ding, Polley, Manswell and reads much like Wilders resume minus the vicious KOs. 2. Ruslan Chagaev. The WBA titlist has 18 months from the time he won his title to begin negotiations with WBA Super Champion Klitschko for a fight. But WBA politics as they are, including a steroid scandal and suspension of interim titlist and steroid cheat Luis Ortiz, has given Chagaev an exception, and Ruslan must now rematch Oquendo and then will be forced to unify or fight Lucas Browne. 3. Deontay Wilder. Typically, this would be Wlads and our first choice. Wlad has never had a shot at the prestigious WBC title once sewed up by his elder brother. Fighting and beating Deontay Wilder would make him the first ever holder of the 4 major World HW titles. However, this would force Wlad's summer fight to be a rematch in Moscow with Alexander Potvetkin. A seriously risky proposition given the jaded former titlists new found conditioning and power. Also, in their first fight, the challenger had no plan except to lunge in head first winging wild L hooks, wherein the Champion simply employed his patented jab and grab for 12 UGLY rds. The new and improved, and highly suspicious Potvetkin would be a very dangerous rematch for even a prime Wladimir Klitschko. 4. Shannon Briggs. The least deserving of all the potential opponents, Briggs has talked the talked and built up the fight like no one's business. Already a backup plan should the Fury fight not have gone thru, Briggs has been stalking Wlad similarly to how Mr T stalked Rocky in the 3rd installment of the film series. With one glaring exception. Mr T, AKA Clubber Lang for the film, had worked his way up the ladder beating the best available contenders and earning the #1 ranking to Rocky's title whereas Briggs LOC reads like a who's who of has beens and never were's. 5.Amir Monsour/Gerald Washington winner. Monsour holds several solid wins over top 50 opposition, and should he beat the highly touted prospect, Geral Washington, he would undoutbedly be leapfrogged into the top 10s of each fo the 4 big bodies. Washington, should he beat Monsour, would have a highly credible win of his own, and would be seen as a legitimate contender in the post K2 era, even at the age of 33. 6. Teper/Helenius winner. Lord knows Robbe Helenius was once the heir apparent to the K2 thrones, but an ill timed shoulder injury, coupled with a huge miscalculation by his father/part-time trainer, Karl Helenius, sent Robbe Helenius stock plummeting like busted pyramid scheme. Sending his son into a fight with a top rated fighter in Chisora, limited to only 50% of his power punching ability nearly destroyed the hungry young contenders career, but he "SEEMS" like his health is back, and should he beat current EU Champion Teper, sporting a solid resume of his own, Robbe would be BACK in top contention, and seemingly ready to take his place as the future of HW boxing. However, Teper is NO easy his to climb. At 6'4 245 lbs, Erkan Teper, though crude, has one punch stopping power. And while seemingly slow, fights very much similar to the rebirthed George Foreman, throwing thudding OH Rs, except with energy of a prime fighter. Teper himself holds several key wins, including putting the proverbial nail in the coffin of former Klitschko clone, David Price. But, other solid wins include stopping former German can crusher Marcel Zeller in his very first fight. Going the distance with tough as nails American journeyman Robert Hawkins, African journeyman Olukun, French journeyman Saliffe, and quickly KOing tough British journeymen Sprott and Rogan. Tepers finest win however is against current world title contender, and possible future WBC Champion, Johan Duhaupas. Should Teper find a way to win the Helenius fight, his wins over Price, Duhuapas, and Helenius would likely put him into a mandatory position to fight Dr SteelHammer. :good What say ya'll????? Should Klitschko take the Wilder plunge and chance a rematch with Potvetkin? Should he shut Briggs mouth? Should he go for the easy out and allow Czar Giftkov the title shot? Plenty of solid names to add to the already top 5 ATG resume of Dr Wladimir Klitschko. Are there any names out there that can get him into the top 3, or even topple #1 ATG HW, el Leon, Lennox Lewis? Any combination of names? He needs 6 more defenses to beat Joe Louis' record. Assuming he beats Fury, that'd leave 5. Maybe, Briggs (1). Monsour(2)(assuming he beats Washington), Giftkov(3), Chagaev/Browne/Oquendo(4) WBC titlist (5) then retire. Sounds like a dream come true for Dr SteelHammer and his faithful following. But I don't think any combination of those wins gets him past Ali for 3rd place on the ATG list, and unless Wlad finds a way to get Joshua and Parker onto his resume, AS WINS, there's no toppling Lennox Lewis for that coveted #1 spot, AKA the Greatest of ALL TIME. :think
Chance a rematch with Povetkin? Wlad humiliated Povetkin last time out. Knocked him down with a freaking jab! Shut him out. People severely overestimate Povetkin. He's still a slow plodder who will get clinched into submission like a compliment cuckold.
Nice post, but you have realized that Wilder has to fight Povetkin after the French men?? So there will be no Wilder vs Wlad... Let it be Briggs, that is a good one after his stay busy fight with Fury
don't underestimate the WBC :nono I do consider Fury a much better allround and quality fighter as ancient Briggs, but actually would favor Briggs head to head against Fury.
If he beat's Fury he should try to fight Wilder in the US I don't care if they fight for the WBC belt or not If the Wilder fight is not possible then retire Waldimir is almost 40 years old anyway
Decent post until I read who you have as your number one heavyweight. Wlad has already passed Lennox or is right on his heals. He doesn't need to have 26 title defenses to be out past him. That aside. If Wlad gets past Fury, I would think he would place a call to Wilder's camp for unification. The IBF (Glazkov) places unifications over mandatories so they would have no problem making Glazkov wait. However the dilemma there is if Wlad defeated Wilder both the WBC and the IBF would want their challenger to get first crack and Wlad would almost assuredly have to give up a belt. For all I know though is if he gets all the belts he may drop them. Which at this point in time would be ok. It would also bring life into the divsion. Glazkov may get another elimination bout as you pointed out as well. Fury is the WBA and WBO mandatory so those belts will be satisfied for at least a calender year. If Wlad fights Glazkov immediately after Fury he would free himself up for the possibility of two voluntary fights before his next mando would be due. I would think Unification with the Povetkin/Wilder winner and perhaps Briggs. If I had to guess I would say: Fury Glazkov Wilder/Povetkin winner Briggs I could also see Wlad bypassing Briggs and just continue to allow himself to hype his fights and consider him a backup if an opponent gets hurt and withdraws.
If he beats Fury he should just fight Wilder and call it a career. fights vs Briggs and Galzkov are pointless and he is nearly 40 years old.
The WBC have made it quite clear that they will ALLOW unifications to take precedence over mandatories. And in any case, step aside money can be passed soas to allow even further ducking of mandatories. Though I think we all know there is no figure Al Haymon or Team Wilder could come up with that would foot the bill to get Potvetkin to pass on his WBC title shot. That said, per WBC's recent statements.......both Chagaev and Wladimir would take precedence over Potvetkin. Not saying for certain that will be the case, but it is certainly within the realm of possibility, particularly Chagaev, who is not in the least thrilled with the idea of rematching the useless old Oquendo whom he'd already thoroughly bested. :-(
I agree with the Briggs fight. It is pointless. Glazkov while overrated has at least fought decent competition. (Whether he deserved the wins is another matter). I do think he would lose badly to Wlad but I wouldn't be too down on the match. Wlad has just signed a new tv contract for 5 fights I think he will honor it, assuming he continues to win.
Im not a HUGE Lewis fan, whereas I am a HUGE K2 fan. That said, it doesnt matter when or how he fought and beat them, Lewis has wins over Vitali Klitschko, Tyson, Holyfield, Rahman, Tua, Briggs, Golota, Mercer, Morrison, Bruno, Tucker, Botha, Ruddock, and Mason and Grant. With a CV like that, there's really not much Wlad can do to overcome Lewis, including breaking Louis' record. As for the rest of your post. Solid, good opinions, but we'll have to agree to disagree with our GOAT opinions. Since most fans simply refuse to include any non Americans for that title, Im just happy to hear from anyone who knows that Louis, Ali, and Marciano aint the true GOATs they werte when they were fighting.:yep
Yes I'll agree to disagree. I also do think when you fight an opponent is very important. I don't wish to turn this into a Wlad Lennox thread their are a million of those. I respect both guys. As for Wlad's next few fights it's impossible to say as the landscape is always changing. Someone may arise we haven't even mentioned yet. I think it's quite obvious he wants the WBC belt but I have my doubts that Haymon will let Wilder anywhere near Wlad. So if he doesn't get that fight next Glazkov in the Ukraine would be a big sell. An all Ukrainian match up. Wlad may want to do that in the twilight of his career. Briggs in America would also sell as disappointing as that would be to see. There are not many marketable opponents in the division right now.
Good opinion. I don't think anyone would argue with it considering he'd be breaking Holmes record with Wilder and becoming the first Undisputed HW Champion in history to hold ALL 4 major world titles and the fast becoming 5th major world title, the IBO. If we include his early defense of his WBO title, a win over Wilder would also give Wladimir the most total HW title victories with 27. That said, even though he is likely to be 40 years old by the time he fights next after Fury, Wladimir has maintained that he has no immediate plans for retirement. So, assuming he beats Fury, and does get ahold of the WBC title, it would be wise of him to make a few volunatary defenses and look to extend his winning streak past that of Louis' in terms of longevity as well which he could break in Nov of 2017. Lots of records out there to be broken, and at 40 years old, I don't think anyone would hold it against him if he were to avoid guys like Joshua and Parker so long as he was still making quality defenses vs the likes of Monsour, Ruiz Jr, Teper, Hughie, etc so long as those fighters were still top name HWs when he got them into the ring. :think
