I've always liked Vitali more than Wlad, I still only have Wlad around 10 on my ATG list and Vitali a spot or two higher. But, now that Vitali's presence is fading and Wlad keeps beating the best and further establishing his own identity, for the first time I can see him not only surpassing his brother, but if everything lines up just perfectly for him, making a serious claim at being the greatest of all time. He'll need everything to go right for him to really challenge for GOAT though, and he'll need to keep fighting at an even older age than his brother did. Here's what I think needs to happen for Wlad to have a strong claim to greatest all time: 1. Needs to unify all the belts. I.E. keep all his belts until after he adds the WBC belt. (At that point, he could just keep whichever belts he so chose to keep) 2. Needs to retire without another loss. 3. Needs to break Joe Louis's length of continuous time as champ record, probably tie or break his consecutive defense record, and certainly go past the overall successful defense record 4. Needs to uncontroversially beat someone (Joshua?, Parker?, Fury?) who then goes on to establish himself as an ATG and dominant champ after Wlad retires. He does all those things, his fans will definitely consider him the greatest ever, and a lot of people like me who just appreciate great champs will put him at 1, 2, or 3. The odds are probably against him, I thinks there's a better chance of him losing before unifying than people think, maybe 30-35% that he loses along the way. That's really a murderer's row of 4 really top opponents in a row he'll have to fight through, Pulev (check) Bryant (legit top 10 but his weakest challenge) Fury (totally unpredictable, I could see Fury getting ko1'd, and it probably will be an easy romp, but could also see him posing more challenges than people think) and Stiverne (whose power, chin, and fast hands and good counterpunching are probably the best stylistic matchup for Wlad out there). Then he'll have to summon up the motivation, discipline, and longevity to last another couple years beyond that. Then a challenger will have to prove himself a great win after that ala Lennox/Vitali(but in a more satisfying way). Unlike a lot of posters, I like to see great boxing history as it unfolds, so I'll be routing for him.
I agree. I'm a numbers guy so I have Joe Louis @ #1 mainly due to his consecutive title defense record. If Wlad breaks it then he is #1. The fighters he beat are better than Louis' competition.
Beat more Hall of Famers than Joe Louis or Muhammad Ali beat. Wladimir is currently at 0. Long ways to go yet.
Wlad has been champion, what 9yrs soon.hard to find contender who is a Hall of famer.Wlad is too dominant to allow somebody HOF credentials.and modern fighters don't fight often enough to earn HOF credentials. Only way Povetkin,Pulev,Haye etc.. Could claim HOF is beating Wlad,or coming atleast close to that.and fight multiple times against other top contenders. Boxing just doesn't work that way anymore.and nobody can't expect that Wlad would lose on purpose,so posters on here could have a hard on for somebodys "hof" career
Sorry but theGOAT got banned, apparently they put a counter on saying the word Jakeoaree too many times. Well, worst is he's back now but you have to settle for a lackluster name.
Schulz,Byrd x2,Botha,Mercer,Barrett,Peter x2,Brock,Brewster,Ibragimov Thompson x2,Rahman,Chagaev,Chambers,Haye,Povetkin,Pulev I don't understand the slightest hate what Wlad gets here. Those are all very good fighters, and Wlad usually demolishes them quite easily. Louis,Ali,Lewis and Wlad are class above everybody else.hard to say who is the GOAT between those, usually it depends who you like more and rate by that. H2H Lewis and Wlad are the two greatest.i'm biased because of the size,Louis and Ali would be too small.but would absolutely be amazing and competitive matches.
Unify all the belts Beat the record for number of defenses Beat the record for duration of reign Keep beating these guys coming through and stopping anyone establishing themselves as top heavyweights like fury, Jennings, wilder etc Obviously not lose again either That's about all he can do tbh Only thing that will help would be to beat good fighters in the states to really establish himself there rather than fighting in Germany. Even fighting fury in the uk would help his profile as a great fighter.
This and never giving the opponents who defeated him a immediate rematch/a rematch will always hurt his legacy.
Keep winning for a few more years, and take out top contenders in the process. Even then, there will never be a unanimous GOAT.
