Can never happen. Especially when there's a video- shocking illegal tactics - 24 mins long , from just one of his fights on youtube.
Most heavyweight greats never beat another great heavyweight that was at or close to their primes. Dempsey, Holmes, Johnson, Tyson, Patterson, and arguably Marciano, Charles, or Louis and maybe others never did it. Sure, some of them beat another great but they were far removed from their peak like Tyson-Holmes. Wlad could beat both Holyfield and Tyson next year and it would mean nothing at this point. As far as this being the weakest heavyweight era. Absolutely not. Take a look at when Dempsey was champ or right before Louis came and cleaned up the division. Hell, most of the time Louis was champ the division was weak. Or look at the late 70s early 80s when guys like Tex Cobb, Scott LeDoux, Leon Spinks, and a completely shot Ali were all top 10 heavyweights. Besides the two peak heavyweight eras of parts of the 70s and 90s the heavyweight division is usally one of the weaker ones in boxing. Today's heavyweight division is fine when compared to most heavyweight divisions of the past.
You've made some good points. Life is defined by circumstances and opportunities. A lot of people say that Lennox never beat an ATG whilst they were in their prime. (unless you count Vitali) But I think it hurts Wlad that he's never beaten a great fighter, and he's lost three times to non great fighters, without avenging all of the losses. Regarding this era, IMHO, it's the weakest it's been for 40 years. Compare the top HW's of today, to the HW's below. 70's Muhammad Ali George Foreman Joe Frazier Ken Norton Ron Lyle Larry Holmes Earnie Shavers Floyd Patterson Jimmy Young Jerry Quarry 80's Tim Witherspoon Mike Weaver Pinkon Thomas Frank Bruno Larry Holmes Carl Williams Tony Tucker Greg Page Buster Douglas Bonecrusher Smith Tony Tubbs Michael Spinks Mike Tyson Gerry C*oney Michael Dokes Tony Tucker 90's Mike Tyson Lennox Lewis Ridd*ck Bowe Evander Holyfield George Foreman Buster Douglas Larry Holmes Ike Ibeabuchi David Tua Oliver McCall Tommy Morrison Ray Mercer Michael Moorer Frank Bruno Andrew Golota Razor Ruddock I won't list the HW's of the 00's, but I don't see how today's era is stronger than those above. I think those 80's HW's were much better fighters as a whole. However, there's certainly some interesting matches to be made today, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how it all unfolds, especially with the likes of Anthony Joshua coming though, and the fact that Wlad has stated he could fight on for another four years. But if you look at today's top guys, can you say they are better fighters than those I've listed? Would Wlad have gone ten years undefeated in those earlier eras? :good
He should have rematched Purrity and Sanders, not Vitali. Right now I think Povetkin deserves one but someone mentioned here that K2 team said it will happen?
Yes,nobody is invicible.especially in HW. but in boxing people always point out for the losses, and rarely gives any credit for win's. And only Purrity and Sanders are problems for Wlad right now.it would probably make some posters happy if Wlad would rematch Purrity and Sanders. Yes,i know it would be ridiculous.but hey, atleast then we could say Wlad avenged all of his defeats
I agree that Wlad's 3 losses hurt him and that will make it hard to move up the rankings. With each of the decades you listed those divisions look much better than today and the 70s and 90s were. But you're listing an entire 10 year period and comparing it to the current year or so of fighters, thats not going to be very accurate. Here's a list of some of the top heayweights who've been around the last 10 years Wlad Vitali Povetkin Haye Byrd Toney Rahman Chagaev Sultan Pulev Chambers Peter Brewster Sanders Maskaev Golota Liakovich Thompson Brock Valuev And if you alter it a bit and go back 8 years and foward 2 then you could probably list names like Wilder, Joshua, Glazkov, Jennings, Parker, etc could be added to the list. If you take the rankings for heavyweights this year and compare them to individual years in the past I think todays would hold up fine.
Great post. But even if you look from 2004-2014, it's clearly weaker than my lists. Of course that's not Wlad's fault. But the facts are, he's dominating a weaker era, he's never beaten a great fighter, and he's lost to three fighters who weren't great. But he is a great fighter, he's come back from adversity, and he deserves an enormous amount of respect. But I just don't see how he could ever be the GOAT, unless he had a time machine.
