People go on about how good Wlads win over peter was. People act like he took the fight imediatly after the Brewster loss, when it was in fact 3 fights and 18 months later. Peter was undefeated when he fought Wlad, but seriously who had he beaten. No-one. Wlads win over Peter was a good win, But by no means a great win.
the 1st win was impressive. Peter was a tough cookie back then and for Wlad to survive 3 KD's with that mandible of his, even more impressive. the second one not too impressive. Peter was already beaten before and was coming back from serious losses
To be fair, I dont think its held in a high regard anyway, but lets have it right, Peter was good enough to of been a world champion. Peter has fought Toney 2x, Chambers, Wlad, Vitali, Maskaev, McCline, who has Haye fought?
I think its great how you could really see him change in the guy that he is now. I dont no the exact round but he gets knocked down 3 times and he looks like a deer caught before the headlights, yet he survives then starts this jab jab jab safety style with a occasional right hand and he starts dominating every round, and has fought so since then dominating, you can blame him for being boring and taking to long to finish of the opponents but in the end he is the true heavyweight champ and reigning for a good period now.
It was a good win. Peter was a tough style for an WK to deal with at that time as he had a 'lack of confidence' ie this was a do or die fight. Peter didn't know how to lose and was confident, fit, ready and super-agressive. This was a motivated Peter before all his contract disputes etc. I thought it was WK's most entertaining fight and both showed heart. WK toughed it out well at the end and nearly had Peter out of there. I dont know how anyone cannot like Peter.
That was the turning point in his career. If he lost to Peter after losses to Sanders and Brewster that would have been the end of it. He battled through it and never lost again. He had more impressive wins in his career but that one was by far the most important.
1. Try to be a little empathetic to their point of view, its not hard to see why they feel that way. 2. Yes, after a 4 round technical decision over Touch of Sleep and a blow out of Eliseo Castillo, Wladimir had clearly put the demons of the Brewster loss to rest and established himself as top dog again. Eh... 3 and 4. Well, Peter went on to briefly establish himself as the #2 HW behind Wlad but nobody in that thread was arguing it was a great win because of Peter's resume going into the fight. I believe Peter was actually the favorite though. At any rate, I think Byrd II was his best win, but even I can certainly understand what the supporters of Peter/Wlad I are thinking when they voted for it, they made themselves perfectly clear.
Who said it wasnt a good win? But the greatest win over a 59 fight career, sorry but im not impressed.
I didn't realize soo many rated the Peter 1 wins so highly, but if they do you have a good point. Good win, not much more. Peter was always limited (when exactly did his 'prime' start and end seems like he's been the same for several years especially after getting up to about 240-250 like he was in wlad 1) and beating JT (and nearly losing the first fight) old brittle Oleg and McCline (who dropped him 3x and always shows flashes of good stuff but usually loses near the top) doesn't equate to A level hw talent imo
James Toney was a quality operator, But the Toney Peter beat GTFOH. Maskev and McCline are ok wins, Nothing specail at all.
