Born on November 17, 1945 - Wongso Suseno was from Jakarta,,,,, On July 28, 1975 - Gelaro Bung Karno Stadium In front of 40,000 home country boxing fans,,,,,,,,,, Wongso Suseno, at age 29 1/2, won the OPBF (Oriental & Pacific Boxing Federation) Light-Welterweight Title, by defeating the OPBF Champion and #5 WBC Light-Welterweight, Chang-Kil Lee 26-2-1 (13 KO's) by a Unanimous 12-Round Decision. Chang-Kil Lee had been the OPBF Light-Welterweight Champion since May 1971 (4+ years), and his only losses were to World Champions - Ken Buchanan and Antonio Cervantes. The 5' 7" 140 lb. Wongso, was a quick-fisted boxer, with a lightning-fast counter right hand. The Championship winning effort over Chang-Kil Lee brought his undefeated record to 26-0-0 (12 KO's), and earned Wongso a #6 WBC Light-Welterweight Ranking. The OPBF Championship brought him 'national attention' in his country, and suggestions of getting either WBA Lightweight Champion Roberto Duran or #2 Lightweight Ken Buchanan to come to Jakarta to fight him in a (late-1975) 140 lb. 'non-title bout' were hopeful. And hopes of fighting the 'new' WBC Light-Welterweight Champion, Thailand's Saensak Muangsurin were suggested for late-1975 also.
Wongso Suseno,,,,,,,,,,, Between July 28, 1975 and April 9, 1976 - Wongso had 6-bouts in Indonesia, and won them all 6-0-0 (5 KO's) His record was now 32-0-0 (17 KO's), and he earned a #4 WBC Light-Welterweight ranking, and a #8 WBA Light-Welterweight ranking. Unfortunately, none of the Champions were willing to risk their Titles in Jakarta, Indonesia - On Saturday, April 10, 1976 - Wongo defended his OPBF Light-Welterweight Title against the 'hard-punching' and undefeated Philippine southpaw, Dan DeGuzman 17-0-0 (10 KO's). In a 'wild-bout' in Jakarta, Wongso Suseno came back from '3' Knock-downs, to pummel a defenseless Dan DeGuzman in Round 11, scoring a TKO 11, as the referee stopped the bout at 1:09 of the round. Note; DeGuzman would go on to defeat the former WBC Light-Welterweight Champion, Saensak Muangsurin by 10-Round Decision, in July 1979. Note; Reportedly, WBA Light-Welterweight Champion Wilfred Benitez (his father Gregorio) turned down a $300,000 fight purse to go to Jakarta, Indonesia in July 1976, to defend his Title versus Wongso Suseno.

After 'no luck' getting WBA Champ Wilfred Benitez to come to Indonesia -after Wongso defeated Dan DeGuzman in April 1976 - he won his next '3' bouts in mid-1976 to go to 36-0-0 (19 KO's), which included a win (KO 9) over Tiger Machado 14-1-1 (14 KO's) for the Indonesian Light-Welterweight Championship. By October 1976, he was the #3 WBC and #7 WBA ranked Light-Welterweight. On October 8, 1976, went to Seoul, South Korea to take on the veteran and #2 Korean Light-Welterweight Hubert Kang 38-16-2 (22 KO's) in what was billed as a 'Pan-Asian' WBA Light-Welterweight Title-Bout Eliminator to challenge WBA Champion Wilfred Benitez. Wongso won an 'easy' 10-Round fight (W DEC 10) over Kang, putting him at 37-0-0 (19 KO's) and in the 'Top 3' position as World Light-Welterweight Challenger.
