I'm actually really down about it being Jaro that's beaten him. Obviously Pong was past his best, but after beating Sosa pretty comfortably last year I wouldn't have thought his fall from grace would be this dramatic. I know he isn't/wasn't particularly special, but the Mexican is/was a pretty proven world level operator who is certainly a superior fighter to Jaro(as he proved in 2008]. Even Kogawa could feasibly beat Jaro from what I've seen. Granted, his defence recently hasn't been anywhere near as potent as it once was. He looked almost in the Marquez-esque mould in terms of his countering, it's not making you miss and making you pay, it's letting you throw whatever, whether it lands or not, and then coming back with something more crisp and accurate of your own(hyperbole of course, but you get my point). If it was happening against those 1-4 guys I suppose it wasn't beyond the realms of possibility that someone at this level could've beaten him, but still, damn.:-( I would've preferred a passing of the torch moment, be it with Marquez, Mthalane, or Viloria(preferably one of the former two). It would've nullified the effect for me, seeing a dude like Jaro do it - no offense to him - is something I find really demoralising. I'm sure one of that trio will be eager to get in with Sonny Boy though, so I suppose the torch being passed via proxy will suffice.:yep
Imagine he'd fought a top fighter instead of Jaro. Imagine the plaudits someone like Segura would get for beating Pong. Gio would have KO'd him brutally based on the Jaro showing. I can't even fathom how overrated Segura would be if that happened.
Does not compute. :yep But yeah, would've been awful. You know my opinion on the dude though, or his legion of fans who loved him so more to the point. It's a shame it didn't happen when first mooted, Pong would've laid siege to him.
Agreed As it stands, this was an even more conclusive way of showing Wonjongkam is shot, rather than 'Segura ruined him' :-(
Jaro would've out of place during the classic 'journeyman claims lineal status' chain of 'champs' in the 80s when Avelar got blasted out by Cardona and the title changed to talented Olympian matched ridiculously Mercedes, to Magri, to Filipino journeyman FRANK CERDENO -() to basic and vulnerable bully Koji Kobayashi, to Gabriel Bernal to, finally, Chitalada. Funny thing was a similar thing happened in the run-in to Wonjongkam claiming the 'linear' (WBC, goes back to Canto) Flyweight crown. Some massive Fly called Manny Packoouow or summat picked it up from the quality Sasakul and it was all vet the shop (again) from there on in ;-)
Even I got slightly sucked into the Segura hype. Deffo thought he would have beaten Viloria but class told in the end.
He was definitely good, massive and came to take his man out. Fair play to Viloria, odd stoppage though :deal Viloria blows too hot and cold to establish himself as the new man in the division, but I loved his K.O of Ulysses Solis a few years back and that was a top scalp at the time. Same goes for the Segura fight, solid win.
Looked like a foetus had spawned on the side of Segura's face. I actually reckon he could have made it to the finish, but he was getting battered and couldn't see the punches coming.
Hmmm I see what you're saying. Would have been nice to see if Viloria could take Segura out. I was a bit surprised that they stopped it but I wasn't complaining.
Think I've heard of Sasakul before...................... [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rp-EwHVG3u4[/ame] This content is protected I wasn't believing the hype at all and still thought he'd beat Viloria. More to do with the fact that despite being a fan I've never trusted Viloria, rather than through any ability from Segura. Viloria's a classy fighter but he's too inconsistent, I thought - even without quite the heinous size advantage he was used to wielding - Segura's style of high-octane pressure would see that brought out in him again. Any combination of Marquez/Mthalane/Viloria would make for excellent fights. They'd each offer a great blend of styles.
I'm an avid Chatchai fan myself, though as you know I'd celebrate a Mijares win even if he splattered my own mother across the canvas.
