http://www.sportinglife.com/boxing/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=boxing/08/03/11/BOXING_Woods.html ============================================== Clinton Woods is determined to play his own part in one of the most successful periods in British boxing history when he defends his IBF light-heavyweight title against Antonio Tarver in Tampa next month. Sheffield star Woods admits he was mesmerised by David Haye's five-minute destruction of Enzo Maccarinelli in London on Saturday night which earned the Londoner the undisputed cruiserweight title. And Woods, who is already in intensive training for his tough clash with former champion Tarver, is convinced Haye has got what it takes to cut a swathe through the best heavyweights in the world. "I must have watched that fight about 20 times and his speed was unbelievable. He was absolutely fantastic and he is definitely the next big thing. Who is going to beat him with that kind of speed?" Woods asked. "Obviously there is still the question of how he is going to do against guys who are two stones heavier and massive hitters like Wladimir Klitschko. But the speed and strength Haye has got is phenomenal." Woods, who won his first domestic titles in the super-middleweight division, has ruled himself out of a move up to challenge for any of the cruiserweight belts soon to be vacated by Haye. It is hardly surprising given his wealth of opportunities at light-heavyweight, where a win over Tarver could set up any number of glamour clashes with the likes of Chad Dawson, Joe Calzaghe or Bernard Hopkins. Woods said: "I've just started sparring and in a couple of weeks' time you will see a major difference. I'm ready for this fight and all the opportunities it is going to bring me further down the road. "I still sometimes find it hard to believe I'm in this position because I only took up boxing to keep fit and I don't even know why I turned professional really. But I took my chances and here I am. "I'm not scared of Tarver but I know I'm going to have to go out there and put the pressure on him to win the fight. "I might not get any favours from the judges so I'm going to leave them in no doubt at all." ============================================== Best wishes to Clinton for his fight with Tarver, as always he seems a nice classy guy.
Woods is another great guy from Sheffield, I know that one would have to exist but two is ****ing amazing.
Woods doesn't have a clue. What he should be saying is that Haye got lucky and caught Enzo before his fragile chin was exposed, and it was always a case of who landed first. Then he should call out Haye and accuse him of ducking by moving up to heavyweight instead of down to light heavy. No clue at all.
As long as the Floridian judges are fair i cant see Woods losing. He's the underdog i think aswel, would be worth a few quid on the bookies.
Woods is a true working class hero. Carries himself with dignity and worked hard for his sucess..hes never shirked from a challenge as far as I can tell either except that time after the Rico Hoye fight when the BBC tried to throw a headset on him to talk to Calzaghe... But in all seriousness the guy went to the states and took on Superman RJJ, took on Glen Johnson, Gonzalez, the hyped puncher Hoye...now Tarver... Fights the fans want to see. Im looking forward to him shutting up Tarver and really getting some recogntion...will also boost JC's inevitable retirement win over him.
