Woods may quit after Tarver loss This content is protected Woods failed to ask questions of his older opponent Clinton Woods may quit boxing after losing his IBF light-heavyweight title in desperately disappointing fashion to home favourite Antonio Tarver in Tampa. The Sheffield man was easily outpointed 116-112, 117-111, 119-109 and failed to drain Tarver's questionable stamina. "I fought the best light-heavyweight in the world," said the 35-year-old. "I'm happy with my career but I don't know if I'll stop. I've done everything I wanted to do... maybe I have something left." If he does call it a day i wish him all the best. Clinton was a credit to British boxing and a real throwback.
Totally agree there Scurla. Personally I think he should retire. It would be a shame to see him slide & start losing to lesser fighters.
I think it's a good time for him to quit, his best days are surely behind him - there just seemed to be nothing there. I'm sure he could dominate the domestic scene but after pitting himself against the likes of RJJ, Johnson and Tarver it seems a bit pointless. He's a good guy but a bit too wet to be an analyst or something. I reckon he should do a bit of training younger boxers, has a great temperament for it.
I wouldnt read too much into Woods post fight comments to be honest, most fighters in their 30's when asked right after a high profile defeat are pretty emotional, & say thats that, its time to pack it in. Then, when bitterness at being beaten creeps into their heads as the days go by & they realise that they miss the attention & fame that fighting at the top end of the sport gives them they come back. Woods will make his excuses, & come back. Im sure of it.
I think this would be a good time for Clinton to pack it in. He has his health, a few quid and a family. Better to go on your own terms than either: 1. Lose to domestic level fighters 2. Be totally hammered and risk your long term health
I won't say disgusted... but I was grossly disappointed by Clintons performance. Tarver IS past his best and in any case has shown distinct problems stamina wise since flipping 2003. I really fought Woods could get to him but he seemed to go in there with a defeatist attitude, an inferiority complex going by his post match interview which was bizarre. Nonetheless, gotta give the guy credit. Turned his life around and did some big things in boxing and always humble. However, the aftermath of Saturday says to me that Hops is most certainly no1 at LHW. His win over Tarver has appreciated and as I said about Dawson, kid needs a bit more testing against good competition before a win over him has any substantial worth.
I think more than anything the occaison got to him which is a real shame for a world champ but that curse has got to a few of our top guys over the years. I hope to be seeing him around at Cleethorpes this summer. My family have a place there so we spend alot of time up and down that coast chasing waves. Personally I am not sure where he can go in the sport now. Maybe he will stick to his post fight judgement, he can be a stubborn bugger old Clint but maybe he will decide after a period of time out of the ring that he still has enough to offer and we could see him fighting on these shores for domestic and European honours, see how goes from there. At his age and with his career I would expect him to maube fight once or twice more just to put a win on the end of his career.
Id like to see him grab a win in a home town fight and retire on a sort of high. Im just so disappointed - I was sure he had the capabilities to win this fight. Hes a good guy like I said however and I wish him all the best. The only thing remotely good about this is that it kind of clears up the debate over whos the best in the division. Woods is out and its defo not Tarver. Dawson is still highly skilled but I believe he needs a bit more fine tuneing. Erdei? Good he might be lineal but if ever was there a comfort zone figther its him. Hopkins is the undisputed number 1 in the division no matter how the haters try to spin it. It just makes the JC fight bigger in my mind.
He's always had that defeatist sort of attitude. I remember before his third fight with Johnson he was saying some strange things like 'I must be mad getting in the ring with this guy again' and stuff like that. I don't expect Woods to come out trash talking and dissing people's mothers but he always seemed to lack that aggression and self belief that top fighters need. As for his performance against Tarver, well that's the problem he simply didn't perform. Tarver fought a clever fight but I thought Woods was capable of walking him down and puuting him under pressure. It simply never came and he looked forlorn in there. Shame to go out like that after some really gutsy performances in the past but the reality is he is no challenge to top guys at Light Heavy. Calzaghe would Lacy him and Hopkins would do what Tarver did much better.
Woods should of boxed Johnson rather than trading. Calzaghe would do a number on Johnson, Taver and Dawson.
Good point. I remember reading that and thinking wtf? Was even more surprised when he was a favourite with Coral the bookies. I actually thought he lost that fight as well, though it could have went either way I do confess. He's been a good pro and its lovely to see someone make something of themselves after maybe going down the wrong road when they were young. I suppose that humble, amiable personality might have worked against him here in terms of him not truly believing that little old him was worthy of such an occasion.
I thought he won the third Johnson fight but most seem to disagree. That was a very hard fought contest and if he'd managed that kind of pace in the later rounds he could have quite feasably got to Tarver and atleast made a dent. When he did land his punches were having an effect he just never followed it up. I would fear for his safety if he froze like that against some of the other guys in this division so it may be wise to bow out before he gets blown out.
To quit the sport on the back of that defeatist display would be a sad way for any boxer to end their career. Hopefully he will take some time out to reflect before he makes any decision as to where he goes from here. He is a likeable guy and I wish him well whatever he decides.
According to a article on the skysports boxing page Dennis Hobson says he will do everything he can to make sure he carries on as he doesn't want him to end his career like that. I like this quote "Who knows, maybe someone like Joe Calzaghe will finally fancy fighting him now."
