Hello all, A little info about me: I just started boxing training. Initially it was for fitness. However, after a sparring session with the instructor, I'm hooked. I'd like to fight competitively eventually. I have a question though. Every time I workout, I get really sore. It peaks after 2 days and is gone by the fourth. I try to take in a lot of protein during this time to speed up the recovery. I trained yesterday and my legs scream every time I stand up or sit down. I want to go back to the gym tonight and train again. Is this a bad idea? Can't seem to find a good answer anywhere and I don't want to cause further damage.
First of all, welcome to ESB and the training section in particular. Hope you enjoy your stay If you're not used to boxing yet it's better to take your rest, over training often leads to injury and boxing is a rather demanding and injury prone sport. If you go again tonight it's better to focus on technique and keep it light. Common sense should dictate your actions, only you can feel if it's good or not. If your legs scream I think you know deep down that they want rest Also, don't put too much emphasis on protein as far as dieting goes. Your recovery will be much better on a balanced diet. Make sure every meal contains carbs, protein and fats, more small meals are better than a few big ones. The carbs you get need to be as rich as possible (vitamins, minerals and fibers) so that means whole natural foods like vegetables and fruits. Above a certain level adding more protein will not do any good, because those proteins will be oxidized for energy instead.
try to eat some protein and carbs within the first 20 mins after training, the carbs will cause an insulin spike and help absorb more of the protein quicker aiding recovery.
Thanks RDJ! I appreciate the advice and I will heed it. I did wind up skipping out last night but I cleaned the house which I guess gave me a little exercise and then I did some stretching. Thanks again!
Ok. I have been hearing that a lot. Apparently some people skip the fat but fail to realize how important it is for absorption. Thanks for replying!
Ahhh...that sounds like a good idea and something I have not been doing. I was reading up yesterday and learned that what you eat after a hard workout is critical. I'll take your advice after today's workout. Thanks!!
