Anyone who can help with sources for the monthly WORLD BOXING ASSOCIATION HEAVYWEIGHT RANKINGS 1967-75 EXAMPLE: Released by Archie Hindman, Chief Executive of the WBA Ratings Committee. Saturday December 9, 1967 (source: Newspapers) 1.....Thad Spencer 2.....Jerry Quarry 3.....Jimmy Ellis 4.....Oscar Bonavena 5.....Floyd Patterson 6.....Eduardo Corletti 7.....Joe Frazier 8.....Karl Mildenberger 9.....Manuel Ramos 10...Dave Zyglewicz I've done alot of research on monthly WBA Heavyweight Boxings Rankings in vain.-1967-75 Preferably. I guess Senior Pep'e would have been the man to call. I need the following: 1967......1969.....1969.....1970.....1971 Nov.........Feb......Jan........Feb........Jan ..............Jul........Apr........Jul........Sep ..............Sep......Sep........Nov.......Nov ..........................Nov ..........................Dec And any other listing help from you 'Mugs' (1972-79)-would be greatly appreciated! I HAVE ALL BOXING ILLUSTRATED 1967-75 (So I do not need them) And Yes I've contacted the WBA itself -(Said they were destroyed in a a fire!)
Senor Pepe may be able to enlighten you on the cause of the fire that destroyed all those WBA records (the illuminati I'm guessing). I'm sure he's got a complete breakdown of all that.
Thanku oh yes I so agree on that, where can he be found? he had info that did not coincide (WBA) yet i'd almost go with his stuff, An example he had Jerry Quarry WBA ranked when he fought Randy Neumann, not true, But he should have been (from #2 and a thrashing By Ali 6 months earlier). Jerry had "Retired from boxing July 25. 1972"- utterly Disqualifying himself from the World ratings).
SALSANCHEZFAN (I was too) I even called South America and some of the WBA'S main office's to no aval, there not going help you, so I do Ring. And I have to admit they are better anyway, they do not take titles away at the drop of a hat, (Ali had to win the WBA title four times). But it seems if there was a real boxing body for the day the WBA would be it, too bad some sanctioning body compared to like NFL, MLB, NBA . COULD NOT COME IN ON BOXING, AND HAVE ONE CHAMPION, aka world ratings etc.!
I don't have the answers to your questions but IMO one thing is sure. How the heck did Thad Spencer get ranked #1 in Dec. 67?? Fact: his biggest victory was the August 67 UD over a 'battle worn' Terrell. Fact: look at his resume going into the WBA elimination tourney. What was his biggest win? NO ONE! Fact: Quarry took him apart in the semi's! Fact: after getting clocked against Quarry he was 0-7-1 the rest of his career!? Sidebar: Had Patterson got the nod over Quarry in the tourney he would have bested Spencer and we would have seen an Ellis-Patterson bout in Oakland early 68 for the WBA title negating the Sweden scrap in September same year. Oh the complexities of our great sport! My $0.02
I agree, Spencer and Mildenberger beat some good fighter's yet neither one should have ever been ranked number #1. Oscar Bonavena what world beater did he beat to get the number #1 slot in 1970? (A DQ loss to Miguel Paez?)- He never beat the Opposition Quarry did, and he did defeat some very good fighter's. Only Ali and Frazier (10) defeated more top ten heavyweights as Quarry (8). Timeline 1967-73 PS (ALI'S whole career was just about the World's top ten ! -(32-5 20 knockouts)
I might as well throw it out there (WBA TIMELINE MONTHLY TOP TEN RATINGS) I've done too much research to "quit" on it now! Seems someone would have the lists somewhere? Yet not everyone is a worthless researcher as myself lol! Also do alotta NFL, MLB stuff, Equal opportunity worthless research researcher ! Or (EOWR)
A little help from the judges and FLOYD PATTERSON would have landed title number 3. Jack Quarry himself said Patterson was the best of the tournament!
I believe California had some form of weird scoring system that wasn't used in the rest of the Country....and JQ was a California popular fighter. 1967-10-28 : Floyd Patterson 195½ lbs lost to Jerry Quarry 195 lbs by MD in round 12 of 12 Location: Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA Referee: Vern Bybee 6-6 Judge: Lee Grossman 6-7 Judge: Joey Lomas 6-7 Elimination Tournament for WBA Heavyweight Title (Ellis-Martin/Bonavena-Mildenberger/Quarry-Patterson/Spencer-Terrell) Patterson down in the 2nd and the 4th "Youthful Jerry Quarry scored an unpopular, 12 round majority decision over former champion Floyd Patterson Saturday and advanced to the semifinals of the WBA's tournament to find a successor to deposed titleholder Cassius Clay. The hard-punching 22 year old Quarry, 193, dropped Patterson, 32, with short rights to the head in the 2nd and 4th rounds. But he had to battle to hold his own in the late rounds as Patterson, 195, appeared to get stronger and take charge of the fiercely contested bout." -United Press International Unofficial scorecards: UPI - 7-5 Patterson AP - 6-6 Draw Long Beach Press-Telegram - 7-5 Patterson Pasadena Star-News - Two writers covered the bout for the Star-News. Joe Hendrickson scored it 7-6 for Quarry and Don Pickard scored it 8-5 for Quarry. Los Angeles Times - Two writers covered the fight for the Times. Frank Finch scored it 7-6 for Quarry and John Hall scored it 7-6 for Patterson. Gate - $78,084.00 at the Olympic Auditorium and $17,164.00 on closed circuit at the L.A. Sports Arena (total $95,248.00 for the Olympic Boxing Club) plus $60,000 in TV monies. Purses - both fighters received a guarantee of $50,000.00 Post fight comments: "I think Quarry won because of his early lead. Patterson came up with a lot of motion in the fight, but he didn't throw enough punches. There was a day when Patterson threw punches. Now it's all motion." -Eddie Machen "I think I could knock out either one of 'em. I would have put pressure on Quarry. Patterson didn't put on enough pressure." -Joe Frazier "Floyd didn't hurt me in our first fight but he really rocked me with a hard right in the ninth today." -Jerry Quarry "I'm a slow starter. Those knockdowns were a matter of formality - but they hurt." -Floyd Patterson
I was not saying Quarry's bout as much as Jimmy Ellis over sea's and referee Valan, BTW both Quarry and Patterson said the weight scales were faulty official wheigh in Quarry 193 lbs, Patterson 195 lbs Patterson was lucky he got a 2 point seventh Round ( one of Quarry's best rounds , on that NON-KNOCKDOWN) in the first bout in the Coliseum.
Longhorn, the California system was really a simple system. 1 point for a winning round, 2 points if there was a knockdown, none for the loser of a round and none for an even round. An old west coast writer named Bill O'Neill summed up the California system to me by saying, "The California system used back then was exactly like the 10 point system used today...only less math." And he was absolutely correct. I transposed a few cards to the 10 point system and what he said was true. It really was a simple and solid scoring system.
Thanks for explaining the CA Scoring System.....I just remember those ABC TV Announcers having a hard time explaining it to the viewing audience.
Now if you want a real head-scratcher, there is the Australian 11 point system. Man, when I heard about this one - which was imported and employed in California during the 50s I believe - I just shook my head until finally figuring it out.
