Having not faced a single Top 10 ranked opponent, that's a very big IF.

    Fair point SENYA.

Papp did beat the young Torres. He also beat the 27 pros they put him in with. Plus a couple of hundred amateurs.

You can only beat who you get in with I guess, and the bottom line about what might have been........we'll never know!

There are too many examples when excellent or even great amateurs became very disappointing pros. What he had done in the am's doesn't count for much in evaluating his chances as a pro.
Some people still think Nikolai Korolyov could beat Joe Louis.

Im a big fan of Papp.
Would have been interesting to see what he could have done givin more opportunity.
He was 37 though when the government pulled the plug on him.
I have a great documentary on him where Dundee says he thought Papp would heve beated Joey G. if given a title shot.

I'd definitely put it up there, along with guys like Savon. The sport would've been even more interesting had the great Communist fighters been allowed to turn pro. Papp was potential championship material IMO, it's just a shame we didn't get to see how it would've played out.

I don't think you can say his career was cut short whenhe was around 37 when he retired ,it was certainly hampered by the politics of his country ,but the fact remains he didnt get to face the top boys.so to project that he would have been Champion is pushing it a bit.

I've got a fair bit of faith in Angelo Dundee's judgement!

That is your perogative.Personally I think Dundee should have walked away from the Ali circus ,as Pacheco did,I would respect him more if he had done so.

A highly successful & rewarding circus none-the-less MCVEY.

Hopefully you respect him for the 15 plus world champions he managed (eg Ali, Leonard, Foreman, Basilio, Pastrano, Dupas, Napoles, Ramos, Ellis, Thomas, Kacar etc).

Dunee managed to get the maximum out of average fighters and the best out of the better ones.

I reckon along the way he would have become pretty well qualified to judge who had championship potential too.
