Apologies in advance for all the questions. What is the tradition with world champions and their belts? In the past, fighters used to keep their world title belts, is that still the case now? If not, when did it change? How did it work in the past when the belts were kept? Did the boxing authorities have several belts available so that when the title changed hands the defeated champion could keep his belt and the new champion would receive a new belt? Were the belts engraved to indicate the weight division? In this photo my hero, Randolph Turpin, is holding a trophy. https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detai...european-champion-randolph-news-photo/3062958 Does anyone recognise it? Was it a trophy that, at the time, was given to the World Champion or was it one that would have been specially made for Turpin in the UK to be presented to him if he defeated Robinson? Thanks
When a title changes hands, a new belt is made for the new champion, and the defeated champion is allowed to keep his old belt as a souvenir. For publicity purposes, the new champion is presented with the defeated champions belt, but the defeated champion gets it back.
With the British title you need to defend it to keep it. I think beat 3 manditory challenges, but I could be wrong.
Yes. I think a boxer needs to win 4 British title fights within the same division to keep the belt. It doesn't have be consecutive victories so the boxer can either lose or vacate the title in the meantime. Previously it required 3 British title wins. Does anyone recognise this trophy that Turpin is holding or would it be one specifically made in the event of victory? https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detai...european-champion-randolph-news-photo/3062958
