Is this a new modern skill or were the old-timers familiar with it ? Are there any examples of lower weight division fighters using this punch in the history of boxing .... or is it only heavyweights ? I do feel Fury had it down much better than Wladimir did, and Fury developed this skill a few years earlier and while still a novice. But I think I'm not the only one here who believes Fury is more a "natural fighter" than Wladimir, more of an improviser, an innovator.
Zab Judah did it in the first round against Kostya Tszyu with 0:57 left in the round This content is protected
It's an old time skill then ? Meldrick Taylor was modern and slick, ahead of his time. He was slick like a gypsy, to be brutally honest about it.
You underrate them, I feel. I certainly believe a talent such as Jack Johnson, Jack Dempsey or Joe Gans must have been capable of it. I haven't any definitive proof yet.
Never saw J.Louis , L.Holmes, Ali, or many other atg's do that..... Must be something from the last 10-15 yrs or so.
It’s not a knock on the old timers but they simply weren’t professional fighters so they didn’t have the time to develop and add this subtle skill set to their game. Remember they had to hold down jobs, raise families, fight in world wars, avoid polio and Spanish Flu etc etc... they didn’t have time to put the hours in the gym as a modern professional does. You can see the difference in conditioning as well between the modern and old fighters for the same reasons. It’s not a talent thing that they lacked this punch imo just a lack of development. It is what it is.
