World Class "Journeyman" Fighters

i'm perfectly happy using the word journeyman/men to a world class tag. ive always felt a journeyman is a guy who does a job. and fights and learns on the job.

if a guy fights for a living to balance out an income ont he saturday/friday night. and happens to get a winning streak. i consider him to be a journeyman or former journeyman.

it's not a derogatory term just a descriptive term form which channel you got to where you are.

 

Yeah, world class 'journeyman' fighters (or 'journeyman contenders') have no particular talent but they have learned their trade well enough, and with the right timing and good work ethic have made it into the upper ranks.

Journeyman is a solid pro.

 

I think the terms," world class",and," journeyman", are contradictions.

Someone like George Scrap Iron Johnson epitomises the title journeyman to me, an honest trradesman, who always came to give a good effort and ,test better ,talented men.

There's a massive difference between an old fashioned journeyman and the pale imitations that we see now, with their 2-189-3 records.

A journeyman footballer or rugby player is actually quite good by definition.... just not a top class performer.

Win some, lose some, mainly to the better people you face.

Most ''journeymen'' these days shouldn't be fighting.

A proper journeyman is what's now politely called a ''gatekeeper''.

Kevin Pompey- at his best he lost a very close fight vs. Tyrone Trice for the WBA Americas WW belt, beat Stephan Johnson W6 and W12, Buck Smith W12 for the USBA WW belt, Harold Brazier 1 out of 2 (Brazier stopped Pompey in the rematch), and drew with Nick Rupa

Buck Smith- he fought 226 pro bouts and most of his 20 losses came while he was well past prime. He went 179-20-2 (120) 25ND overall and stopped 9 times. All of the stoppage losses came very late in his career. He fought 3 ND vs. Harold Brazier (the first was a 15 rounder).

Mike Hunter- at his best he was able to clearly beat Dwight Qawi W12 in '90 for the WBC Americas CW belt, Pinklon Thomas W10 in '90, Jimmy Thunder KO4 in '90, and Ossie Ocasio W10 in '90.

 

Sammy Fuentas- did win the WBO JWW belt, even had a shot at other world title belts (LKOby10 to JCC for the WBC WW belt) but he was a journeyman.

Hector Lopez- L12 M.A. Gonzalez for the WBC LW belt, LSD12 Sammy Fuentas for the WBO JWW belt, and LKO9 Randall Bailey for the WBO JWW belt while past prime. He did beat Juan LaPorte, David Santos, Israel Cardona, and others. He even gave Tszyu a little trouble in Tszyu's 11th pro fight, W10 Tszyu.
