World Heavyweight title fight should always be main event

Manuel Charr vs Ustinov was for the WBA regular Heavyweight Championship.

Would you consider that fight to be more worthy than the undisputed LHW rematch?

 

Normally they would be. But this is a special event they’re trying. Every single fight could be a headliner. Even Zhang-Kabayel or Buatsi-Smith could be the headliner of a DAZN fight night card (like Chisora-Wallin just was).

and for what they’re trying with this card, the most important fight is the headliner. This is a historical LHW fight. It goes to the top.

 

I don’t give extra magical weight to heavyweight fights. It’s Dubois’s second defense of a belt he was gifted and doesn’t even hold the lineage for (and where the guy who holds the lineage stopped him). The fact it’s at heavyweight doesn’t magically make it a more important fight than undisputed at one of the original weight classes between two ATGs.

160-175 lb divisions have more historical depth.

 

Honestly I wouldn't mind Turki putting up more of these sort of fight cards regularly where a heavyweight title fight is on the undercard to a better main event fight between lighter fighters.

Maybe the only other condition I would add would be the main event would need to be for a legit title also. As long as that happens I cant complain.

 

too many more casual fans don’t follow lighter weights. And they should. The level of skill on display is often much higher among the smaller guys.

One of my favorite historical fights to use to point this out is Mayweather-Corrales. The fight was at 130. It was an absolutely brilliant display of technique and effective aggression by Mayweather, a public PhD thesis in boxing.

To not watch those kinds of fights because they’re not heavyweights is basically just missing out. I’m absolutely cool with fights of that caliber getting top billing over a run of the mill HW alphabet title defense.

 

Yeah, but atleast we will be getting better fight cards.

Lets say late 2000s/Early 2010s Turki made a fight card

Main Event: Mayweather vs Pacquaio
Co Main: Wladimir vs David Haye

And then 5 more bangers. Instead we got Brad Solimon on the Mayweather/Pacquiao undercard. And we got Ola Afalabi on the Wlad/Haye undercard.

 

Yes sure.

But the two best light-heavyweights in the world should be prioritized when the #1 heavyweight (Usyk) isn't on the card.

 

Yeah, most of the time including myself, the undercard is skipped to only watch the main event.

Perhaps to showcase or promote those types of fights in the lighter divisions, having them as the main event that follows a solid heavyweight clash would be good for boxing.

Mayweather, even though his star value blew up after the DeLaHoya fight, he still had a bit of a name prior to that. He did a bit of self promotion and thrash talking to get views. Beterbiev and Bivol on the other hand do zero self promotion so topping a stacked card here is better for boxing overall.

 

The eastern Europeans in general can’t sell fights. Even a relative goofball like Usyk can’t. I guess now Usyk is a draw, but he only got there due to Fury selling the hell out of their fights. Say what you want about Fury, the man knows how to promote a fight.
