Can any of you(anybody in the world!) answer these questions regarding the final qualifier?; 1) Are the WSB boxers required to have TWO fights in the current season, like the APB fellows? 2) It is still only one boxer per Nation for this qualifier(and the Olympics?) 3) Professionals can only be nominated by their national federation if that country has no other qualified boxer at that weight? Presumably that also applies to the WSB/APB entrants? If I'm correct-and I'm guessing because you know what AIBA are like for changing rules and also giving minimal info and guideline- then the event will be pretty sp**** with very little real quality.
1) Yes. They had to have 2 WSB fights to qualify for the Olympic qualifiers I believe.(Its one of the ways to qualify at least) 2) Only one per nation for the Olympics. 3)Not sure what the whole, pro/"amateur" deal is. The thing is these days, theres no real line anymore between "pros" and "amateurs" The guys who fight in the APB/WSB are just pros who fight under the AIBA banner. I mean the "P" in "APB" stands for Professional even!
True, but tbh there is a big difference between helping someone out in the gym and given them the ins and out of a fighter you know like the back of your hand that's also a very good friend Though im sure billy Walsh has more than enough info on dean
Him and Moore have been training together and sparring for over a year in the same gym. I'd guess they're pretty pally too at this stage. Either way, I'm glad for Gardiner. Didn't think he'd even get this close. Would be a great acheivement
The APB/WSB guys were limited to pro's with less than 20 fights but for the final qualifier any pro can fight if entered by his national federation. However with Russia, GB, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Brazil,Uzbekistan, USA, China etc qualifying so many boxers it limits the number of entrants if I understand it correctly. What I don't know is say for example Ray Moylette of Ireland has qualified to enter under the two fight APB rule, but could the IABA nominate JJ Nevin to box as well? And if Ireland has one or more WSB fighters with more than two fights, could they box?
Countries who qualify more than one can either nominate their representative, or have them compete in a box off to determine the qualifier,to the best of my knowledge.
Thanks. I think I understand that but can more than one boxer from a country box in the last qualifier?
They could in theory nominate John Joe Nevin but hasn't poor moylette had enough bad luck already😂 We could send Tommy McCarthy as well if he was up for it
That is a fair point but anyway Moore will have Walsh in he's corner which is a big advantage I know if he qualifes its amazing, he has beaten two very good boxers already and he has the beating of everyone left , i don't there us any boxer id be more happy for than dean tbh as he competes in a very tough division only returned to boxing a few years ago and is serious grafter
I'm not accepting your premise of bolding 'senior'. He has shown great skill. He's the youth Olympic Gold medalist. I see Ramirez as a bit of a wildcard. He has been awful since his win at the Olympics, but I think is pulling out all the stops now. His lack of grit though, can show up in the ring. He has performed poorly in the two World Championships since his Olympic victory. Antonio Vargas looks incredible. The beating he put on Veitia was good. I agree Russell would make a better pro. The competition at Stevenson's weight class is probably the biggest out of any weight class. Ruben Villa looks amazing, too (I don't even know if he's made the Olympic team, but he looks like he'd be a great pro). In terms of pro talent, America are near the top.
Forgive me if this is a dumb question but I recall that Wladimir Klitschko expressed interest in competing in this years olympics. Since he is currently training for his rematch with Fury July 9th, is he allowed to bypass the qualifiers and go directly to competition in August? Can his country automatically nominate him to represent?
