Calzaghe's a decent if not great body puncher. Check out the shot he caught Kessler with (somewhere around the half way point, can't remember what round). He's not up with the likes of Hatton and McCallum though, these guys are specialist body punchers.
Dreadful post. For starters - you would have criticised him for fighting Miranda. He was splattered by Pavlik and Abraham twice. Secondly... Mundine had improved greatly between the Ottke and Kessler fights - but was still stood on his head.
Chavez is one of my personal favourites. But currently I'd say Hatton. Roman Gonzalez has a particularly nice left hook to the body.
Hopkins' shot to Oscar was awesome. Ken Norton delivered a picture perfect uppercut to Ali's lower rib cage in their third fight which doubled Ali over and nearly caused a KO. If you can get Ali to double over from a body shot you did it right.
Michael Gomez in his day. His savage beating of Alex Arthur back in 2003 still gives me shivers! Throw in him nearly stopping Amir Khan with a liver shot as well!
There's a theory that body punching diminished when glove weights were increased. Back in the day head hunting could lead to broken hands, with small gloves and looser wrist support if you caught someone on the top of the head it could do serious damage. So people went downstairs more often.
