Yeah, 'fair but firm' my ass. He just made up his own catch phrase to get himself recognition like Mills Lane did with 'let's get it on.' Over the years I've seen Cortez be both unfair and even skimp out on being a firm ref because he's had a few fights get out of control on his watch. And he does try to be apart of the action too much just like Richard Steele back in his day. He shouts out way too many instructions and is always very quick to break up clinches and not allow the fghters to work their way out. Most refs are like that though and that's why you gotta love Steve Smoegr because he keeps his ego in check and stays out of the action as much as possible. He allows the fighters to fight.
I don't know what the fuss is about Cortez in the PBF/Hatton fight. How long did they want that wrastling to go on for? It was utterly brutal to watch before they actually started fighting.
Laurence Cole is recovering though, he'll ref the big fights again soon enough. Joe Cortez went from one of the top 3 ref's of the sport to one of the worst now in a matter of just 2 fights Hatton/PBF and Soto/Lorenzo I.
What did the guy do in the PBF/ Hatton fight? All I noticed was that he took a point from Hatton for hitting behind the head....which is a no no. Other than that, what else?
I just did. I was rooting for Hatton to beat PBF back then,,, but can't see what the guy did wrong. Was he supposed to let Hatton rush in and burty his head in PBF s neck more than was already happening? The fight was almost unwatchable until the 8th. I'm certainly no PBF fan, but Cortez was fine.
