That a very skilled very tall bantam could beat a short heavyweight.

... that Corbett would beat Tua.
... that Tommy Burns should be favoured to beat Deontay Wilder.
... that Marvin Hart would walk right through Frank Bruno.
... that Young Stribling, Eddie Blunt, Marvis Frazier would all beat Vitali Klitschko.
... that Billy Conn and Joey Maxim would both knock out Usyk.
... that Packey McFarland has a good chance to outpoint Thomas Hearns.
... that Benny Yanger's career acomplishments are comparable to, if not greater, than Muhammad Ali's.
... that there have been hundreds, if not thousands, of HWs who would have knocked out Ken Norton.
... that Sam Langford would have ko'd Mike Tyson.

Pretty much all the wrestler type hyperbole written about guys becoming pivotal points of arguments.

Jim Jeffries vs Jack Johnson counted as a defence of Jeffries lineal title, 6 years after Jeffries retired as champion, whilst Joe Louis vs Ezzard Charles didn't count as a defence of Louis's lineal title, 2 years after Joe retired as lineal champion.

That Billy Conn and Jack Britton weren't great fighters and that Conn looks average on film.

That because of the single statistic that there are a few more countries producing pro fighters in 2024 than 70-100 years ago, the sport now has a deeper talent pool and is in better shape than ever.

That any present day four round novice would beat Harry Greb takes some beating.

Canzoneri standing no chance of getting out of the first round against Gervonta Davis.

% of rounds won over a career being the best and most objective metric to judge a fighter.

Ernesto Marcel and Santos Laciar not being in the HOF as opposed to the mighty likes of Carl Froch, Barry McGuigan, Arturo Gatti and Ricky Hatton.

That boxrec is the authority where a fighters record is concerned in the face of direct evidence to the contrary.

A bloke at work who considers himself an authority telling me that technique in the present day sport is superior to the 70s, and when asked what he thought of Miguel Canto, then telling me that Canto fighting in the 00s and getting bum****ed by Pacquiao and Juan Margerita shows how much I know about the sport.

This narrative pops up more often than I would like. Joe Lewis is apparently a "bum" now to modern day fighting fans. Arguably the greatest HW ever is spoken about as a tomato can. I have no idea why this has any traction.

It's rare and bizarre , that Marciano would wear out and stop George Foreman.

It’s as if they’re not actually watching Louis or they somehow can’t appreciate what he did in there. One thing I think is that they want to see Joe move and punch more - like the mods - but Joe was so on point he moved and punched as much as was necessary - and it was more than sufficient for him to obliterate many opponents and beat the rest otherwise.

I agree. Joe folded opponents in half. He was a precise killer in there. If you watch his knockouts he really hurt guys. The damage he did to opponents was brutal. If he was around today, with colour and the TV fanfare he would be worshipped as unbeatable.

Actually, the very worst one I've heard about boxing occurred just a couple of days ago. As I'm sure you know, Tyson Fury's fight against Oleksander Usyk has been postponed due to a severe cut Fury sustained in sparring last week. A number of pundits have said in public that Fury got cut deliberately so that he could avoid fighting Usyk on February 17. It beggars belief that people could be so stupid, but these opinions are given airtime and used as clickbait on Youtube.

That just goes to show how bad Fury's reputation is currently. If he were to be struck by lightning people will believe he done it himself.

With some of the creative conspiracy theories surrounding the rescheduling of Fury-Usyk, one might think a US President just got assassinated.
