That's sadly the tragic winner of this thread, shocking stuff, never saw that I'll add Bowe-Golota fights to the list of runners up though
Good call. Biggs had perhaps the worst single eye cut I've ever seen, and Bey almost beat him. Biggs did well to pull out the win, but anyone could see from that fight that he wasn't ready for Tyson.
Holy ****! I didn't realise Benn's injuries were that horrific. He doesn't get enough credit for the sheer warrior spirit he showed that night in the most brutal slugfest i've seen by far. Is the shadow on the brain a permanent condition?
yes it was awful, they only showed the highlighths during an interview with burke on the news. the zambians despratly wanted a champion, at any cost but what a dreadful cost. dificult for burke beacuse he felt bad and cheated all at the same time, i think they reinstated him as the champion but cannot remember.
I think Ali suffered the majority of his competitive brain damage against Shavers. Muhammad's coordination and reflexes never looked right after that. Manila is usually cited as the tipping point, but Ali looked fine at 220 for Dunn the following year. I truly believe that Earnie softened Muhammad up for Leon Spinks more than anything or anybody else, although Inoki also took something away from his legs in that stupid Tokyo stunt. Yes, Gomez actually managed to win a couple more titles after, but Pintor in New Orleans was his Manila, and he never stopped an opponent remotely of that caliber again.
But....wait a minute.....im confused! Didnt Joe just beat Ali from pillar to post for 45 minutes? I could have sworn i read dozens of posts with words to that effect, about a month or so back:yep
Another great call but having just read Choklabs account of the Zambian fight, that has to take the 'honours' here
