I know which was the best team - Barry Tompkins, Larry Merchant and Sugar Ray Leonard. Merchant was simply inducted to the World Boxing Hall of Fame and nobody as young as Max has achieved so much prominence in boxing analysis in such a short period of time. There is no doubt in my mind that boxing commentators are becoming increasingly more the scape goats for boxing fans' frustrations... If you really have to evaluate boxing journalism with boxing performances, side by side, Max Kellerman is pretty competent to commentate fights at this level - Hatton vs JLC, Calzaghe vs Kessler, Miguel Cotto vs Shane Mosley. What is pretty arrogant is a young fighter like Floyd Mayweather telling Larry Merchant what he is or what should he do, Floyd realised his mistake afterwards and that is gone... Max is everything but arrogant when he does his job and emphasises what he believes in. Somebody has to do their job anyway and most wouldn't have the nerve to do what these guys do.
i dont know i think they make a good team to be honest jim knows his stuff and says exaclty what needs to be said while mcKenzie really does add the the excitment to a fight. kinda the same with tessatore and atlas in that joe talks about the politics and the blatent things and teddy talks about the things goigntru the boxers mind ect. i think a good boxing team is what makes the commentators. for example the hbo team was seen as the best with jones, lampley, merchant becuase you had the pro athlete the stats man and the wise-*******...it was all gelling together then roy disappeared and foreman (who did it time to time ) became part of the team and it really didnt fit there was no young gun to say stuff that niether of the others knew about......then merchant was pulled cuz of drink and now we got 2 stat men and an old fighter....it just doesnt fit well.
Günther-Peter Ploog to be the worst boxing commentator of all time - no one can lower the standards of commentating boxing even more...impossible. English-speaking commentators are light years ahead of him, even the most biased and worst...
This coming from YOU!!! It's got to be Foreman. What was said about the Tito/Hopkins fight is 100% true. He nuthuggs the puncher in every single fight no matter what is going on. He was even worse in Mayorga/Forrest II. I've had my problems with Lampley too; mostly that he gets a little carried away with the sound of his own voice and seems to always see a lot more of what he expected to see before the fight than he's actually seeing during it. But it's GOT to be Big George.
Kellerman is the worst. Just because he doesnt know whats hes talking about, especially boxing. Hell be perfect alongside Joe Rogan though in MMA Id actually like to see Rogan choke him out
Atleast he had that. He then worked his way up the ranks. You sound more jealous that he has gotten so far, more so than being critical of his actual work. I'm not a huge fan, but I'll defend the guy, because atleast he has enthusiasm for the sport, and it's genuine.
Bernstein is hands down the best at the moment. Pacheco is good as well..I just couldnt take his manlove for Ali
Kellerman: He is wired (and a female newspaper columnist pointed this too) Merchant: He has done mellowed out on a little Kentucky bourbon. But both are probably ready to "rock-n-roll" at the post fight victory parties.
