Worst business decision of the decade: Ward signs with ROC Nation

I was thnking the same thing the other day.

Probably not bad in terms of "business" (Ward is getting huge money in thsi contract)

But in terms of career, yes. Unless ROC start working with PBC, Ward is going to run out of opponents really quick

 

he will be fine. If it goes bad he can always steal a few more of biggie's rhymes and release his "original tracks".

When the remi is in the system, aint no telling....

 

Another fighter that comes to mind when talking stalled career is Gambia....SMS promotions last I heard went bankrupt...is he still going to fight Walters?

But Roc Nation will insist he fights Kovalev before he contract is over. I just cant see how they can pay him all those millions for fighting bums. Where is the money coming from? Unless Jay Z just loves to hand out millions and not make any money for himself.

I'm sure they know they have with Ward ..I think it's just a matter of time .

 

No way Roc Nation lets Ward finish his contract without fighting Kovalev.

 

I stand by my original ****ogy, not being American I never grew up with peanut butter and jelly and quite frankly having tried it, it's a bit weird. Peanut butter and chocolate is a far better combination.

Zac Dunn is a terrible opponent. While he has a belt it's meaningless, he's had what 18 fights or something, he's a prospect, he is far from world class. If this is the level of opponent he is going for then I have little hope for Ward's career.

The Roc Nation deal financially was a good idea as long as they are willing to pay. Ward made a reported $2million for Smith which is way more than he would realistically earn based off his actual drawing power. But I can't help thinking in terms of opposition he's going to be stuck between facing the Dunn's and Smith's or more risky fights against the likes of Kovalev.

 

Golovkin would make more sense for Ward, especially if his next fight is a PPV success. Also as Roc Nation have Cotto and if he beats Canelo, they could maybe use a shot at Cotto as a way of securing a Golovkin fight for Ward.

Kovalev for me is the only fighter I am not sure Ward could beat. I'd favour Ward over Golovkin and Stevenson and at this stage at least Beterbiev but Kovalev is good on the outside and inside, he's the most dangerous fight for Ward. I know it's been reported they are negotiating a fight with Kovalev but I'm not sure if that's due to a lack of other options or if it's a PR job like the negotiations with Froch, where the whole time they were arranging a fight with Smith.

 

Intriguing.... it looks like the only way Ward can make money is to fight Kovalev or Pascal, either of whom would knock him out.

 

Kovalev might but Pascal not a chance. Pascal couldn't even beat Froch.

 

Business wise it doesn't look as a bad decision at all. Career wise it's another matter.

 

Froch and Kessler are obviously retired.

However, you should add Zeuge and Feigenbutz on the list. Feigenbutz has won WBA Interim belt in his last fight and Zeuge looks to be the goods. Both fighters pull solid ratings despite being very young. Feigenbutz is 19 and Zeuge is 23.

Both managed by Sauerland, which appears to have a very good stable. Probably none of their fighters is looking towards Ward though.

However, Ward is making $2mil per fight with Roc Nation, which makes him the 2nd best paid boxer at 168 behind Abraham.

It's not a bad business decision. If he really wants to face the best at 168, perhaps Roc is able to put enough money for those fighters to take the fight, who knows.
