Who is the worst boxing commentator in Great Britain and Ireland? Lets admit it, there are a few bad eggs. We're talking across the board here people; Sky, Setanta, ITV, RTE etc. My personal pick would have to be Duke McKenzie on ITV. For being an ex World Champion he does not appear to have a clue what is going on in the ring sometimes. Seems to have a total fixation on the home fighter; appears to notice phantom punches land that the viewers had never seen thrown in the first place, then when the opposition fighter starts to lay in with some heavy leather Duke and John Rawlings tend to ignore the fact, instead taking a wee time out to talk about what the missus made them for dinner last night. Once saw him commentating on Setanta; it was an Antwun Echols fight I think and, well ol Antwun was taking a bit of beating, but nothing too serious. Duke spent most of the fight screaming for the referee to stop the contest. When they went back to the studio afterwards the rest of the pundits didn't have a baldy what he was on about, and made this plain in their comments. Well, thats my view. What about yours:good
McKensie's good. Rawling's over reaction to punches landing on the British fighter is ridiculous. One way traffic then 1 punch come back and he's "Got watch he doesn't get caught by too many of those".
Most are pretty bad. By far the worst is Duke McKenzie who is clueless. Spence Oliver is also pretty poor and for a tv commentator seems unable to speak English very well. Jim Watt is sometimes ok, but has a preoccupation with 'hands low' fighters and frequently remarks when they get hit as if getting hit in boxing is something of a surprise!!
Jim Watt.... good fighter - his commentry is repetitive and unintuitive. Reg Gutteridge ramblings were hilarious.... Glenn Mcrory and Ian Darke should never have been seperated. Darke is fabulous at calling a fight and has a real humble demeaner which I find very cool.
Ian Darke is great at calling everything - his football commentary is also very good. Richie Woodhall may know what he's talking about but he comes across so boring and disinterested.
Duke can annoy me sometimes but usualy i dont mind him The over hyping of a fighter is more what annoys me
I'm a fan of Nicky Piper as a pundit. I like Jim Watt's commentary, for the most part his analysis is spot on McKenzie is tosh. All the ****s on ITV **** me off no end, especially that smarmy jack of all trades master of none know nothing twat Rosenthal
i was under the impression that "the count" is actually a big fan of boxing? or am i the only one to have heard that
I really like Ian Darke, but he also has the Rawling habit of over-reacting anytime a punch lands on a British fighter. I agree with Jeff that he should always work with McCrory; the two work well together, and genuinely seem to get on. John Rawling has the added bad habit of not being able to distinguish when a punch lands, and when a punch doesn't land. I feel this (combined with his over-reactions) makes him unsurpassable in the annoying commentator stakes. I know Jim Neilly isn't everyone's cup of tea, but he seems more enthusiastic than anyone outside of Adam Smith. I dislike very few pundits. McCrory, Piper, Woodhall are all great, imo.
