Kind of his job, to be fair.

He would always call Pernell Whitaker, “Pee Wee” too. He should’ve stuck to his forté as a yes man in Ali’s corner, but follow the money, I suppose.

Pacheco by far was the worse. He and Chubby Cheese were the worse team. I found Pacheco to be a pathetic POS.

Best team was Tim Ryan and Gil Clancy on CBS.
Don Dunphy was kind of of boring, but knew his stuff.

Cosell was Cosell, the guy you loved to hate. His "Down goes Frazier, down goes Frazier, down goes Frazier" is ingrained in my mind.
I don't like Lampley, preferred Barry Tompkins by far.

In hindsight Showtime had the consistently the sorriest boxing announcing teams.
HBO was hit or miss. Over the years, mainly "miss". Leonard was terrible, as was Roy "third person" Jones.
And George was just too nice of a guy. Kellerman just was not likeable.

Quarry and Tom Brookshire were a fun team, somewhat short lived though.

They brought in Burt Lancaster for whatever reason to do the color commentary for the "Fight of the Century", Ali vs Frazier. It was not a good idea. Just terrible.

In the 80s, Lou Gossett (An Officer and a Gentleman) was brought in. Again, not a good idea.

Even though Pachecho had some unbelievably stupid takes, I always thought he had a great voice for broadcast. Always thought the tandem of Pacheco and Steve Albert brought a "big fight" feel with their voices, ditto with Lampley and Merchant over on HBO.

Not really, plenty of the old-time commentators used to go long stretches w/o saying a word, & the fights were better off for it.

Not the style of Sheridan’s time, though.

Old-timers like Dunphy were still around when Sheridan came up. I would say Sheridan along w/ Cossell were responsible for ushering in the new wave of relentless "motormouth" commentaries.
