Lewis-Holyfield I. Old Holyfield won the first two rounds, then took the 3rd round as a 10-8 round, but after that he lost 9 rounds in a row!
"Destroyed" is the wrong word, i would say Lennox mostly dominated the last 9 rounds in very careful safety-first & safety-second fashion.
it does sound a little bit over-exaggerated but at the time of the fight i thought lewis was doing more than dominating, he was bullying at times.
I think Fenech - Nelson I is perhaps the worst I've seen of any decision, though someone will be along shortly to list worse ones. But in terms of overall stinking shitness and damage to the sport Lewis - Holyfiled I took the cake. At least Whitaker - Chavez was even or at least close after about eight rounds, so it's down the list slightly for me. Perhaps the single worst scorecard I know of, incidentally, was the chap who had Chavez beating Randall in their first fight. I can't remember his name, it may have been Stevie Wonder.
Agreed. This one was for the P4P Title, and became the subject of Dave Letterman's Top Ten list the following night. Red Cobra brought up Bob Foster-Ahumada, so I might as well toss in SRL-Hearns II, as Ray's always also openly conceded that Tommy won that rematch. (For him though, it's perhaps not as impressive an admission as might commonly be supposed. I'm sure he's convinced in his own mind that Hearns would have again succumbed within the championship distance, but Ray had already benefited mightily from the elimination of the championship rounds against Hagler.)
I really can't decide between Holy/Lewis I and Pea/Chavez.... They both made me storm out of the room in disgust.
Hagler-Antofurmo 1: Hagler took it too easy late and let Vito back in the fight. As the defending champion I had no problem with Antuofermo being given the benefit of any doubt. Lewis-Holyfield 1: I maybe the only person on the planet to believe this, but it was not that bad. I am British and had Lewis winning 7/5. The fact the fight was in the States and Lewis fought too cautiously put the result in jeopardy. If Lewis had won a majority decision say 114/114, 115/113 and 115/113, there would of been little fuss made. And yet that result with one round difference turns into a majority draw... There was far too much outrage put into that bout, there have been far, far worse decisions in boxing. Nelson-Fenech 1: Styles make fights and styles are judged differently. Nelson, I thought, fought a good defensive fight. Although stung and indeed hurt on occasions, he did also fight expertly with his back to the ropes, and a draw seemed fair to me. Sweat Pea-Chavez: My winner.
Maybe not a horrible one on its face, but as was pointed out, it would have been a nice legacy enhancement for Hank. Beating any middleweight titlist when you're Armstrong's size gives some serious bragging rights.
Someone will have to elaborate on that. I've heard it was the NYSAC title and the California State title. Either way, it was not a legitimate World title. That should be obvious given the 10 round distance it was scheduled for. I don't see it as much of a legacy enhancement either way. People know the score.
to be fair mixed accounts are coming out on the legitimacy of the draw. there have been reports that the decision wasn't horrible and garcia (and his performance) are a bit underrated
