Corbett. Lost his title when a MW punched him in the stomach & never won another meaningful fight that wasn't fixed afterward.

    Leave the thongmaster alone!

He did hold the best HW in the world Jackson to a draw that was apparently in his favour, beat Choynski and McCoy and gave Jeff a good run first time around.

Ugly style, yes. But it did seem like it was intentionally awkward and ugly.

Nice! I wasn’t criticizing you by the way. I’m a college student myself.

Tommy Burns maybe? Willard was pretty useless on film too. Realistically though, the guy who would have the most losses against other champions would be Burns because of his size.

I will start with who it is not.

It is not Corbett, it is not Hart, and it is not Willard.

It is sure as hell not Carnera, before anybody suggests it.

It is probably not Braddock, but it might be.

If we are keeping it to lineals, then the smart money would be on Tommy Burns, or Leon Spinks.

Both were amazing fighters in their own right, but we have to make a call here.

Perhaps the thing to take away from this thread, is that every single man who ever held the lineal heavyweight title, was an incredible fighter.

    Change my mind.

Marvin Hart or Leon Spinks for the lineal champions. If you include the ABC champs theres a few other fun names to throw out like Michael Bentt and Bermane Stiverne

To keep things in mind, it probably isnt anyone after 1970 though, and especially after 1980 though like the early 2000s, since PEDs start becoming a factor. Someone like Marvin Hart couldnt even be ranked top 10 today without some form of peptides, HGH and anabolic cycling on the off season

I can, but they accomplished much more.

A few years back we did a thread, where we had to rank the top five wins, of every lineal heavyweight champion.

Hart was a surprising winner, we even had a bit of change left to squabble over after five.

Braddock rightly finished fairly low, but you had something to work with.

Leon Spinks was the only man in the tournament, who had nothing significant outside of his title winning effort.

I seriously question if Norton could've avoided getting knocked out by a peaking Mercado. For me, that's the win which forever stamps Leon as a legitimate heavyweight. He almost propelled Coeztee through the ropes in attempting a quick knockout. And his Championship Distance stamina against Ali is not to be questioned. Yes, he blew hot and cold, but in Ali I and Mercado, he was very good. In 79 career outings, Evangelista was only stopped four times, and Leon was the second one to knock him out.

Among disputed Championship Distance era title holders, I'm not sure Ellis or Terrell beats Leon at his best. Jimmy had stamina issues and couldn't recover after being hurt. I think sheer aggression with bobbing and weaving sees Leon through Terrell.

Braddock's best was over the first four rounds against Louis, and it was the Bomber who had to do all the maneuvering as Braddock did not take a single backwards step.

Lineal, I'm not sure who Leon beats. He'd have to retreat with Braddock, and I think Burns and Corbett would simply elude him.

Spinks was definitely a legit heavyweight, but he simply did not want to train. He was pretty damn good when he showed up in decent form (As we saw with his stoppage of Mercado), and he simply is remembered as a bad fighter h2h because most people don't remember him as a guy who didn't like to prepare himself for fights. It seems like most of Leon's peers get that negative stigma of being bums who didn't work out, but Spinks isn't given that same bit of understanding.
