I'll limit this to the linear champions, from Dempsey on.
I'm picking the champions who I would not bet money on to beat any other champ.
    No particular order:

    Carnera
    Braddock
    Leon Spinks
    Floyd Patterson

Ingo may belong on the list.

I would not put Carnera or Patterson on the list to be honest.

While they were not among the best by any stretch, they did have fairly deep resumes.

Some of the weaker champions from the 90s would be better calls.

Johnson and Liston were very poor champions.

Johnson was before Dempsey, so he wasn't considered.

Liston had a very poor reign, because of the Clay fight.
But, I believe the Liston who beat Patterson, would be near the top of the list of h2h against the other champs.

Why do you have so much contempt for Patterson, BillB? Can't you at least concede to him the benefit of a doubt that he was a pretty small guy compared to nearly all his opposition?

Yeah, I didn't see the disclaimer regarding Dempsey onwardÂ… Still, Johnson had a shhitty reign.

I don't think the Clay that "beat" Liston was that great. He certainly was a couple years later.

His chin. Anytime he stepped into the ring he had a much higher than average chance of hitting the canvas. That isn't a fighter you want to bet on.

BillB, you're basically a good guy...a good poster, like me, you're old school....I just don't like the brazen contempt and disrespect that you dish out to Patterson all the time.

Spinks, Briggs, Braddock, Rahman. Briggs didn't even deserve to be champ as I felt Foreman clearly won their match.

I'm critical of Patterson as a fighter.
I don't disrespect him. I've posted here many times, that Patterson was a true gentleman, a humble person and a credit to the sport.

He was champ during an era when the HW Champion was the ultimate sports figure in the country. In many ways he deserved that and was good for boxing.

Briggs did not officially get recognition by any governing bodies for the win over Foreman, Besides, no one considered Foreman the real champ. by the time the time they fought in 1997 - linear champion or not. I don't even consider Brigg's WBO title a real title. So, in my mind, Shannon Briggs was never a Heavyweight World Champion.
