Taylor beat Aaron Davis for the Welterweight title..... ....but I'm fully in agreement with the quote that Taylor had his prime beaten out of him by Chavez. Pre-Chavez I believe Taylor was good enough to compete and give an exellent account of himself against any fighter his size in the history of the sport......I cant say that holds true post Chavez........ ....post Chavez Taylor imo only beats just the caliber fighters like Aaron Davis, but I would'nt put my money on him against great fighters at that point. As was said, "Taylor had his prime beaten out of him vs Chavez."
I sort of view Chavez-Taylor like Trinidad-Vargas, where the losers (young champs) were still good afterwards, but never fully recovered. Although Taylor had a better win afterwards (Davis) than any post-Tito win for Vargas, Vargas was still competitive (roids aside) 2 years after Tito with a great fighter in DLH, whereas Taylor was dominated in his defeats 2 years post-Chavez. I think Taylor at his best at 140 could give great fighters a hell of a fight, but I don't think he could've had much time at the top level due to his style, weight problems at 140, and talent level at 147 in the early/mid 90s.
My vote goes to Lujan, who was already posted. Dude's ear was practically torn off. Don;t think I've seen these ones yet though... http://labourparty.files.wordpress.com/2007/03/fernando-vargas-eye.jpg http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/features/1998/holyfield/tomatocans/images/photos/alicooper.jpg
Too bad there aren't any pictures of Jess Willard, post Dempsey to post. Big Jess probably still holds the title on this one.
I can't imagine any worse injure then death itself and this is one that always stuck in my mind. Leavander johnson
That was an unfortunate fight. I think Richard Steele was the only person that realized how badly Taylor was getting hit, even if he was outlanding Chavez 3 to 1. In an HBO special on the fight, I remember his words "Chavez was landing hard punches, hard body punches. The kind of punches that break bones" The fact that Taylor was honest to good pissing out blood, jesus christ. You realize his liver and kidneys must have been so damaged. The amount of internal organ trauma for that to happen. . . :-(
