There is no question that fight should have been much, much better. But the conscious decision by Manny to have Wlad start the fight by knocking down Sultan's lead hand was a huge, huge mistake. The beneift of getting Sultan out of his rhythm and gameplan was drastically overwhelmed by the fact that it TOTALLY messed up Wlad's usual calling card.....a ton of jabs. Wlad never got into a jabbing rhythm and there was no need to start the fight that way. He could have slid his jab in immediately so Wlad never truly got into dominating mode last night. Shitty, shitty boxing decision by Manny last night!
I disagree. It's hard for a righty to jab against a lefty. By knocking down Sultan's jab, Wlad had plenty of opportunities counter Sultan's jab with his own jab or a right hand. However, Wlad was hesitent to pull the trigger. This fight was not Manny's fault. He kept begging Wlad to throw a right hand and he wouldn't do it.
Disagree. There was no reason for it. All it ended up doing was immediately getting Wlad out of terminator mode. So he could never flip the switch when he needed to... Wlad would have dominated that fight and end with a knockout if he just would have come in immediately with his leap of jabs and open Sultan up from the get go.
Wlad looked beatable , i was expecting much more. Poor tatics slapping sultans jab down , but he did get away with it. Not good to watch at all. Manny is a great trainer but Wlad looked scared to get hit. As did Ibragimov. Should be a confidence booster to Wlads future opponents.
Once again, it is not easy for a righty to get off a lot of jabs against a lefty. When he was knocking down Sultan's jab, Sultan was open for counters. There was a couple of times when Wlad countered after knocking down the jab and he landed flush. The strategy would've worked a lot better had Wlad countered more. Wlad did however, stop Sultan from throwing a lot of jabs.
I thought the tactic worked fine. It eliminated any hope of Sultan's offense, and it opened Sultan up to counters. Wladimir simply didn't hit the gas last night, much to Steward's chagrin. The gameplan was fine and the result was an easy win, just not what everyone wanted.
that is a ridiculous statement. he completely dominated a top5 contender with one hand. tell me another fighter in the world today that could do that in their division. When he let his hands, he made iggy look like an amateur. but it was a disappointing performance in the sense he fought way too cautious. he let his go late but he should have done it about 4 round earlier. i think iggy's style also greatly contributed. he was afraid of wlad. i really hope that is the case so maybe he can fight chagaev next who was in attendace. wlad is the class of the division and last night proved it even more.
Vlad got into a comfort zone, and felt he didn't have to take any extra chances to win the fight. You always hear broadcasters say a fighter, " could win the fight with the jab alone". That was it right there! Vlad was impressive skill wise, his defense was very good, incredible jab, speed, size, but he was uninspired.
Are we not making simaler points ?? , yes both fighters were over cautious. I'll clarify my 'ridiculous ' points for you 1. Slapping the jab down, not good to watch. 2. Both fighters were over cautious. 3. Both fighters were reluctant to engage. 4. It was a dull fight.
he was winning rounds but not by much, he might have thrown a dozen right hands the whole fight. If Iggy could have been a bit more active and threw a couple of combos a round he could of stole some rounds. Wlad didn't exactly "dominate" him. His punch output was way to low.
Sorry , im just not jumping on the Wlad bandwagon with you. Wlad does look beatable , im baffled as to why the majority of fans think Wlad is the current / next great thing.
considering he went 12 rounds and didn't take any notable shots to the head is something to consider.
