i agree with most of what you said, but I do feel that Sanders might have been better than some of the names on that list, only because you have to look at the "timing" of some of those fights.. Sanders had just sparked Vitali's brother, whereas Tyson and tucker were completely shot and hadn't done anything of note in a while. Mercer was coming off a string of losses and or poor performances. McCall was fresh out of rehab and in no mental condition to be in that ring as shown by his crying incident.

I think Byrd as good as he is is getting too much love. Nothing about him makes me think Lewis wouldnt do to him what Ike did.

You may be right, but speculating on what Lewis might or might not have done to him, doesn't diminish the value of the win when contrasted to the names on Lewis's list.

    Byrd improved after ike imo.

Victories over tua and holyfield surpass many of the guys lewis beat. I reckon, assuming he went on the have the same success, byrd would make lewis's top 5 victories.

    Clearly Ossie...

But being serious, maybe Mason at his best would at worse be pick-em with anything Wlad has fought.

Nah.. Mason's record is too heavily padded, and he struggled mightily with journeyman in Mark Wills and Bigfoot Martin. He's not as good as Byrd, Peter, Haye or even Chagaev.

Not as good in the boxing sense, but Mason's chin and clubbing power make the fights pick-ems at the bookies...

Would you say that his resume and wins over proven fighters are as good some of the names mentioned?

The Biggs win was a solid plus point, that compares to most mentioned. Byrd has a W over a Klitschko, which Mason probably would not be able to achieve. But Byrd would be giving a ton of physical tools away to Gary, and no matter what round, and his probably handsome points lead, Byrd could be caught by Mason.

Biggs was off for a year, had only fought once within two years, got his ass kicked in his last two fights, was having lifestyle issues outside the ring, and had parted ways with the Duva's-never finding a good replacement.... He was basically finished.

Byrd survived Vitali Klitschko, David Tua, Andrew Golata and Wlad in the first fight.. He was well more accustomed to fighting at the world level.. Mason was tough, but no more than a commonwealth level fighter who's record was horrifically padded.

I went to the fight, Biggs looked good and gave a solid performance, showing up some of Mason's limitations, before his rather strange capitulation.

Mason fought tough journeymen and veterans as a rule. It was a learning experience for him. He had his rather obvious limitations, but as you mention toughness was not one of them, and he could also bang at a level higher than Commonwealth. Injury cost him his career, post Lewis he was in a position to step up to the next level, but never got the chance.

Byrd would not of been a good opponent for him. But Mason would of had more than a decent chance of scoring the stoppage.

And just a few months after Biggs lost to Mason, I caught his fight with a shot Ossie Ocasio on TV, and he looked absolutely mediocre.. Maybe the reason he had a few brief moments of success with Mason, said more about Mason's abilities than it did Biggs'?

Which is basically "all she wrote" in his near 40 fights as a pro.

Common.. He had 30 something fights and was still taking on men like Wills and Martin, and struggled like hell with both of them.

Tough for the level he fought at yes... Tough when compared to men at the world level is something he never proved.

he was a professional fighter through some 34 pro bouts and in his late 20's before ever suffering that retina injury... How much more time did he require?

If we're going to base this soley off of the unlikely event of a "lucky punch", then fine.. You could use that caveat in just about any matchup where a big puncher is involved.. But no way does this blind shot in the dark, support your claim that Mason was as good or better than any man Wlad ever beat, and nor should it make him favored over a guy who surivived the attacks, of Wlad, Vitali, Tua, or Golata all of whom's power were tested against higher level opponents than Mason's...

Since when did Byrd become such a good boxer? Apart from beating a fat fatty tug-boat lard-ass version of Tua and going 9 rounds with Vitali, what is his claim to fame as a heavyweight?

Byrd was a solid top 5 boxer. He is not a great name to have on your resume, unless it's by decision and during the period when Don King coddled him.
