No, KO had a yearly poll from 1980 and Boxing News had Pound for pound ratings in the 70s.

I said that Pound for pound meant meant very little in boxing other than Ray Robinson was Pound for Pound greatest of all-time, until Tyson cleaned up the Heavyweights and people wanted something else to talk about.

And as for Tyson pre-title; he did not win the title until he beat Spinks. So boring or not, it is not a mistake someone on the classic forum should make, you got to keep up standards.;)

It is far too lazy to say Tyson fought bums before Berbick. But the reality was Berbick/Tyson was pick-em all the way up until a week before the bout. And Tyson had fought some fair fighters before Berbick (Ribalta, Ferguson, Tillis and Green), and pretty much cleaned up the top 10 before getting his title shot against Spinks.

Foreman too had been #1 contender for a year before getting his shot at Frazier. And you did not get a #1 ranking at Heavyweight in the early/mid 70s without proving yourself against very credible opposition.

You cannot generalize a topic like this, that is sloppy, lazy and very negative.

The bloke has about ten posts though. :huh

...and KO ran its regular pound-for-pound ratings from around late 84/early 85, so it was f-all to do with Tyson.

Like I said KO started its yearly pound for pound poll in 1980.

But with hindsight I was harsh to lay into him if he has 10 posts. I was wrong to assume everybody is a grizzled classic veteran like your good self.

And we could do with more members on this board.

    Welcome Moe Faux.;)

I'm not up Tyson hoop, but happen to think that he'd have beaten the **** out of Foreman had they ever faced each other at their best. :yep

Couldn't this thread be just as easily titled "Best Pre-Title Opposion...." and be asking the same question? Maybe that would get people feeling less defensive and on a more positive vibe...???;)

Tyson won the title when he beat tony tucker to UNIFY all 3 major belts IBF, WBC, WBA. thats when he became undisputed champion. spinx had refused to fight tony tucker, so he lost his title to tucker. tyson was the unified champion.

Spinks and quite few others disputed his claim, thus Tyson was not Undisputed Champion. Indeed you will probably never have an Undisputed Champion again (if there was ever one in the first place), as there are far too many champions disputing any claim.;)

Foreman's opposition on paper was a bit better (Chuvalo, Peralta 2x) than Tillis and Green, but he also faced more stiffs and they seemed to be randomly distributed throughout his fights, whereas Tyson stepped up in class at a fast, but steady pace.

"Undisputed Heavyweight Champion? If it's 'undisputed' then what's all the fighting about?" - George Carlin

I agree with TBooze - Tyson may have won 'titles', but he became Heavyweight Champion of the World by beating Spinks. And Lennox Lewis became Heavyweight Champion of the World by beating (ugh) Shannon Briggs.
