Roger Tillerman in Reid-Ottke. Not a very original pick, of course. But it's a sad indictment of the sport that Tillerman was ever allowed to officiate a fight in any way again after that.

 

Chavez vs Taylor 1. Worst timing for a stoppage in boxing history.

 

The ref is there to call if a fighter can continue or not, they are not the timekeeper.


A broken eye socket, a mouth injury that even Duva suggested led to Taylor swallowing a lot of blood and a vacant look after hitting the deck, suggests Steele did the right thing.


That the smart fancy lost their bets is too bad! Taylor was in no position to continue.

Someone pointed this one out a while back but Juan Martin Coggi v Eder Gonzalez is on another level for a corrupt refereeing performance.

Absolutely! Ingo vs Patterson I is another fight that comes to mind. Lucky that Patterson was not killed in that fight that should have been stopped way earlier.

 

The ref for Shoji Oguma vs. Chan-Hee Park I was hilariously bad. Oguma committed almost every kind of foul known to man, to the point of actually starting a riot in the South Korean crowd, and didn't lose a single point. The highlight was probably when Oguma held down Park's head and popped him one, and the referee turned to Park and said, "No holding."

Mangaña has some other highlights, too. He was the ref for the Bassa vs. Zapata fight that involved someone outside the ring tripping up Zapata and Zapata subsequently getting knocked out cold (supposedly by Tomas Molinares). The result was not a no-contest or a DQ but instead that Zapata was given a few minutes to get his senses back together.

Then he was the ref for another controversial Bassa fight, which involved Bassa getting punched while he was on the canvas, among other things.

Nonsense. If he was worried about Taylor's health he would have stopped it sooner. There were TWO seconds left. Chavez was on the other side of the ****ing ring. If he was Sonic the Hedgehog he wouldn't have been able to land anything significant. They robbed Taylor, end of discussion. It was about protecting Chavez's record and likely had to do with $$$.

I actually got to see this one. Tabor kept helping the hometown guy up after clean knockdowns in the most obvious, blatantly corrupt manner possible while Sal Marchiano went crazy on the ESPN telecast screeching about it. Lopez gets the decision and is booed out of the ring and Marchiano went in and confronted the ref, who yelled back defiantly "I've been refereeing longer than you've been alive!".

Never seen anything at that level again, although the Coggi-Gonzales example mentioned above was awfully close.

 

Too right, that Duva did not stop it either was a black mark against him name as well.


And I agree it was about money. Us smart fancy who picked Taylor on points, and are still bitter over 30 years on!
