Oh, I just thought of an awful one. The ref for the Weaver-Coetzee fight. Continually allowed Coetzee to lean on Weaver on the ropes and grab the ropes and didn't reprimand Coetzee for it until the last few rounds of the fight. C.J.'s comment reminds me that this ref spoke Spanish, while Weaver spoke only English, and Coetzee, in addition to English, only spoke the Africaan I believe. Stupid move there.
I didn't really see it that way, but it was late. I could be wrong, and I wouldn't trust Joey Curtis with my life or anything.
You might not be right, but I haven't seen it in a long time myself. I should go back and watch again before I speak further on the matter.
Larry Holmes, used Randell Tex Cobb as punching bag, nobody ever took so much punishment and was still standing at the end. The referee (Steve Crosson) should have stopped this slaughter.
Add in his blunders in Joichiro Tatsuyoshi v Greg Richardson, Jeff Chandler v Gaby Canizales and James Page v Jose Luis Lopez and we start to fill a book.
OK, Canizales-Chandler - I'm pretty sure I've got the rounds. It was the 3rd round where Canizales had Chandler on the ropes. Gaby's only real success with Jeff was when he had him on the ropes. But he had him there and was really doing well raking Jeff when he lands 2 punches - quite legal on the beltline - and Perez stops the action to caution Gaby on low blows. Jeff takes advantage of this by moving off the ropes into the ring center where he was boss. Opportunity gone. Tatsuyoshi-Ricahrdson - Remember the 2nd round of Ali-Frazier where he thought he heard the bell? Well in the 10th round he doesn't hear the bell and allows Tatsuyoshi to batter Richardson after the bell. Page v Lopez - rounds 9 and 10. The budweiser logo turns the center of the ring into a skating rink. Everytime they hit the spot someone slides. In the 9th Page's legs quite literally slide out from under him and he goes face first to the canvas. Never have I seen such an obvious slip. Perez scores it as a knockdown. Also in the 10th, finally Perez stops the action to wipes down the logo but never tells the timekeeper to halt time and by the time he is finished wiping it down - or thereabouts - the bell rings. These may be minor things, but they seem to add up with Tony Perez and they do effect an outcome.
