A lot was made of Deontay Wilder's level of opposition prior to facing off against ageing Cuban boogeyman Ortiz and that discussion has been done to death on these boards of late but the question got me thinking about other champions who have been criticised for their opposition 5 defences in. So let's hear your worst runs - not worst champions as good champions can have poor runs, see JCC - for titlists racking up at least 5 defences.
Terry Flanagan's was pretty bad in recent times. would add Kell Brook to that but i dont think he made 5
Chris John. The former WBA Super/Featherweight champ had a long run of sub-par opposition also, including a robbery vs JMM in a division packed with stars at the time.
Brook's was awful although only three deep. Jo Jo Dan, Bizier and Gavin is a very soft run. Weird that his next fights would be GGG and Spence.
Chris John was always a frustrating figure as he could clearly fight but was happy to stay under the radar.
I know its beaten like a broken drum, but diddo Wilder. Nothing more frustrating than guys who know they are going to lose a couple so they cling onto and shine their belts in the bleachers.
Martin didn't make any successful defences so his run is ineligible for this thread. He got blasted out the first time he tried to defend his fortuitously obtained title.
He won a title, that makes him a champ? Right! Juice man and Coward hearn saw the opportunity! Worst champion ever and it was a fake belt just like the triple bum first got! Amen
My original post talks about worst runs of defences as champ. He didn't make a run of defences. He got knocked out the first fight he had after winning the title so again CANNOT be eligible for this thread.
I always thought he was slightly avoided for what ever reason, Spence and the GGG fight prove it was never his balls being small
I half expected Adonis to have been mentioned by now as he prob has the worst run I can think of as a lineal champion.
