For me it still has to be the Calzaghe-Manfredo fight. I re-watched this again the other day and Joe barely landed anything flush in that last 100 punch flurry. Shocking ref. Funny thing is that same ref, allowed Khan to continue after the first knock down against Prescott when he was clearly on ***** street and had no legs (proabably because of all the crap he received from the Manfredo stoppage).
Has to be Taylor vs Chavez 1. I don't have anything against Steele, I think he was a very capable referee, but there was 2 seconds left. He had dominated the fight from start to finish, and should have been allowed to those 2 seconds.
LOL, maybe he was just slapping Manfredo (as usual), but Manfredo wasn't doing anything about it. Manfredo said after the fight, "I was waiting for him to stop punching, but he never stopped.." :nut
In recent time, calzaghe vs Manfredo was just criminal. Calzaghe had the ref in his pocket just like hatton did against Tszyu.
I blame that on Taylor. He should have responded to Steele when prompted instead of standing there expressionless. Why was he expressionless? Cause he was in serious trouble. He could have gotten killed in that extra two seconds.
Definitely Taylor-Chavez. Manfredo is a ****ing bum and wasn't doing anything but getting slapped around. I didn't mind that stoppage at all actually. It made me laugh.
Taylor-Chavez was a good stoppage, Taylor was asked twice if he was OK and didn't respond. The time left or the score on the cards don't matter. As for Calzaghe-Manfredo, who cares? The fight was a joke, it either gets stopped when it did or a minute or a round later.
Are you looking for early stoppages or late ones? Michael Sprott was once stopped about a minute after his legs, arms and brain had gone..... not sure whether the ref ever operated in the UK again.
Ike Williams-Beau Jack Was the ref trying to get Beau killed in there? Even by the standards of the 50s, it was a terribly late stoppage.
I really don't think an extra two seconds would have killed him, and instead he's all ****ed up because he stuck around way too long. Part of Steele's job is to know how much time is left. I don't care if he says it isn't. I blame Steele, and it was a ****ing horrible stoppage given the circumstances.
There is no way in hell Chavez could have inflicted more damage to Taylor with two seconds left. Anybody saying otherwise is full of ****.
